Out in the streets, they called it murder. In the studio, Damian Marley called it "Welcome to Jamrock," crafting the biggest hit of his career and one of 2005's best singles.

With an infectious bass-heavy dub beat blending reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and samples under conscious lyrics blasting tourist ignorance of Jamaica's violent crime-ridden underbelly, "Jamrock" was a track that couldn't be ignored. It also couldn't help but revive the somewhat stalled career of Marley — a son of Bob dropped ungratefully from his Motown label after he won a 2003 Grammy for best reggae album ("Halfway Tree").

Success being an even stronger cosmic force than irony, Marley was re-signed by Motown parent company Universal when "Welcome to Jamrock" took off on American hip-hop and R&B stations last summer. Marley's same-named third album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart in October — higher than any of his father's now-classic albums had charted in their heyday.

The album and single scored Marley two more Grammys in February, for best reggae album and best urban/alternative performance.

Marley returns Sunday for his first post-"Jamrock" Honolulu concert, at the Waikiki Shell. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $25 lawn, $35 reserved.
