Baseball fans to gather

An annual gathering to celebrate the birth of the founder of modern baseball, Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr., will be held Monday at the O'ahu Cemetery in Nu'uanu.
The celebration starts at 11 a.m.
"Bring a glove if you want to play catch," said Lew Matlin, a member of the organization, Friends of Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr.
Last year, more than 200 friends and family gathered to see the unveiling of a plaque honoring Cartwright.
Cartwright was born April 17, 1820, in New York City, and died July 12, 1892, in Honolulu.
The Baseball Hall of Fame describes Cartwright as "The Founder of Modern Baseball." Many of Cartwright's rules are used today such as: playing the game on a baseball diamond and placing bases 90 feet apart, and having nine players to a side with games lasting nine innings.
According to Matlin, Cartwright moved to California during the gold rush. He was traveling to China in 1849, but got sick and was left in Hono-lulu. He enjoyed Hawai'i and never left.
Retired Advertiser sportswriter Ferd Borsch and Matlin began visiting Cartwright's family plot several years ago to honor him, and decided to hold annual celebrations.

BYU-HAWAI'I SWEEPS
Brigham Young-Hawai'i got a pair of last at-bat victories over Azusa Pacific yesterday on Senior Day at BYUH field in La'ie.
In the first game, Melissa Lehano hit a two-out single in the seventh. Kim Brimhall hit a sharp grounder through the legs of the first baseman, which allowed Lehano to score and give the Seasiders a 1-0 victory.
Natalie Mordwinow pitched a one-hitter for BYUH.
In the second game, Echo Allred pitched a complete game and singled in Lehano with the winning run in the eighth inning as the Seasiders won, 6-5.

GAUTHIER SHINES
University of Hawai'i junior Patricia Gauthier recorded the second-highest pole vault height in the Western Athletic Conference this season, clearing 12 feet, 6 inches Saturday in Sunset Meet No. 8 at Cooke Field.
Hawai'i will compete in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, Long Beach Invitational and Mt. Sac Relays this week in California.
