Woman, 40, dies in 'Aina Haina crash

Advertiser Staff

A 40-year-old woman was killed yesterday morning in a two-car crash in 'Aina Haina, the third person to die on O'ahu roads in a 24-hour period.

Police said the woman, driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla, pulled out of a driveway onto Kalaniana'ole Highway's eastbound lanes and into the path of a 1995 Mazda 626 sedan.

The Mazda hit the driver's side of the Toyota, police said. The accident happened about 6:50 a.m., 129 feet west of West Hind Drive in the right lane. The woman and her passenger, a teenage boy, were taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center, where the woman died.

The driver of the Mazda, a 26-year-old 'Aiea man, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

All three people were wearing seat belts, but the Toyota's air bags did not deploy, police said.

Also yesterday, the medical examiner identified two O'ahu men who were killed Sunday in separate traffic crashes.

Investigators identified Urubano Sandy of Honolulu, 26, as the passenger in a Jeep Cherokee that flipped over a retaining wall on the H-1 Freeway's airport viaduct and fell about 30 feet to the ground.

Police said the Jeep was headed east about 7:20 a.m. Sunday when the driver apparently lost control, hit the concrete wall along the right shoulder and ended up on a grassy traffic island at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Middle Street, just before the on-ramp to the H-1 Freeway westbound lanes.

Police said speed and alcohol probably contributed to the crash. The driver was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and was listed in critical condition upon his arrival.

The medical examiner's office also identified Samson Aguiar, 26, of Kane'ohe as the driver of a motorcycle that crashed head-on into a pickup truck on Kaukonahua Road near Wahiawa on Sunday.

Police traffic investigators said the 2004 Honda motorcycle was speeding toward the North Shore when the rider lost control. The motorcycle careened onto a grassy shoulder then back onto the road. It crossed the center line and collided with a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck that was headed toward Wahiawa.

Aguiar died at the scene. The truck driver and his passenger were slightly injured in the crash, police said.
