About 67 Hawai'i Army National Guard soldiers are scheduled to return this morning to Schofield Barracks from a year of duty in Afghanistan.

The approximately 57 soldiers with the 298th Engineer Combat Battalion and 10 soldiers with the 117th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment are the last of a major call-up that included duty by 2,200 citizen soldiers in Iraq.

The soldiers are scheduled to be back at about 6 a.m.

"At this point, with these guys coming home, everybody from the Hawai'i Army National Guard who was mobilized in the last couple of years is back home," said Hawai'i National Guard spokesman Maj. Chuck Anthony.

Several individual soldiers volunteered for deployment, and about a dozen Hawai'i Air National Guard troops are on duty in the Middle East, Anthony said.

Anthony said five years are expected to pass before the Army Guard will be "in the box" again for possible war duty.
