Vercruyssen captures world trampoline title

Honolulu's Nani Vercruyssen won the double mini-trampoline event at the International Age-Group World Championship at Eindhoven, Netherlands last weekend.
Vercruyssen, a 13-year-old Kaimuki Middle School student, scored 65.9 points to defeat two Russian athletes, who finished second and third. Vercruyssen also placed 14th in synchronized trampoline.
Matt Moniz, an 18-year-old 'Aiea High student, placed seventh in the double mini-trampoline with 69.1 points.
Spencer Dupio, a 14-year-old Roosevelt High student, finished in 43rd on the double-mini trampoline.

HAWAI'I TEAMS FALL
Both Hawai'i teams slipped in the standings yesterday at the USGA State Team Championship in Bluffton, S.C.
The Hawai'i team — 17-year-old Erin Matsuoka (83—160), 15-year-old Nicole Sakamoto (87—164) and 11-year-old Cyd Okino (83—165) — tumbled from 17th to 34th with a 320 total in the women's competition.
Georgia leads with 285.
In the men's competition, Hawai'i dropped from 31st to a six-way tie for 36th with a 301 total. Kellen-Floyd Asao (77—150), Chris Souza (76—152) and Shannon Tanoue (81—156) make up the team.
Texas leads with 282.
The final round of the tournament, in which two of three individual scores count toward the team total each day, will be held today.
UH FINISHES 16TH, 18TH
Jarett Hamamoto shot a final-round 2-under 70 yesterday to finish in a tie for fourth at 209, but his University of Hawai'i team wound up 16th in the 18-team field at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev.
The Rainbow Warriors finished with an 894 total. Kaua'i's Casey Watabu shot 69—211 to lead Nevada (852) to the title.
Elsewhere, the UH women's team finished last in the 18-team field of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rainbow Wahine finished with a 962 total. Pepperdine won with 873.
SURFING
IRONS ADVANCES
Kaua'i's Andy Irons remained in world title contention by advancing to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.
Irons edged New Zealand's Maz Quinn, 11.76-11.33, in the third round, which was held in 6- to 10-foot waves at La Nord, Hossegor, France.
Irons, the three-time defending world champion, is currently ranked No. 2 on the 2005 World Championship Tour.
He needs to place higher than No. 1 Kelly Slater of Florida in this contest to stay in mathematical contention for the world title. Slater also advanced to the fourth round yesterday.
Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore was eliminated in the third round by Australian Luke Egan. Bruce Irons of Kaua'i has yet to complete his third-round heat.
TENNIS
U.S. WINS IN SPAIN
The U.S. team, with 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola, defeated the Philippines, 2-1, yesterday in the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas in Barcelona.
The U.S. plays Ecuador today.
