HILO, Hawai'i — About 25 to 30 friends and family yesterday joined in the second day of searching for a missing 12-year-old Waimea boy who disappeared Saturday evening while fishing with his brother and uncle on the south Kona Coast.

Alexander DeRego was last seen by his brother fishing for ulua at a popular spot commonly known as "The Rock in the Water" near Kealakekua Bay at about 8 p.m. Police said it was the first time the boy had fished at the spot but said he is an experienced swimmer.

Searchers near Ka'awaloa Point on Sunday found a dive light in 20 feet of water that DeRego had been carrying before he was reported missing at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities found no other sign of the boy yesterday, said acting Battalion Chief Reuben Chun.

Chun said the search effort yesterday included divers who were checking underwater caves as well as searchers along the shoreline and crews from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Two Big Island Fire Department helicopters, a fire department rescue boat, a Coast Guard cutter and a Coast Guard helicopter also joined in the search along with a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft that searched offshore over a radius of 30 miles, he said.

"We're going to continue tomorrow at first light," he said.
