Kalehua Moniz passed for three touchdowns as Baldwin won the Maui Interscholastic League first-half football title with a 29-13 victory over Lahainaluna Friday night at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.

The Bears (6-0 overall, 5-0 in the MIL) handed the Lunas (5-1, 4-1) their first loss of the season The Bears are ranked No. 7 in The Advertiser's statewide football poll.

Moniz completed 9 of 16 passes for 154 yards, including TD passes of 46 yards to Colten Quinabo, 9 to Kainoa Klask and 19 to Chase Nakamura.

Kealakehe-HPA game postponed following player's death

Friday's scheduled Big Island Interscholastic Federation football game between Kealakehe and Hawai'i Prep was postponed indefinitely following the death of a Kealakehe player.

Royden Kalavi, 17, a junior offensive and defensive lineman, was killed and five others, including two other Kealakehe players, were injured in a two-vehicle collision Friday afternoon in Kona near the school campus. (See story on Page A1.)

Kealakehe Athletic Director Mike Hernandez said the game will be made up only if it has a bearing on a playoff.

Hernandez said the Kealakehe (4-1 overall, 3-0 in BIIF) game against HPA is an interdivisional game. Kealakehe is 2-0 against BIIF Division I opponents and must only beat Kea'au to clinch a playoff spot for Division I. There are four Division I teams in the BIIF. HPA is one of six Division II schools.

There are no open weekends in the season for a makeup. The regular season ends Oct. 29 and the playoffs start Nov. 4.

Hernandez said the schools and league will meet if the game has to be made up. He said the only way that might happen is if HPA needs the game to qualify for its Division II playoffs.

In another BIIF game Friday night, Konawaena defeated Honoka'a, 28-7. The Wildcats are 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the BIIF. The Dragons are 1-3 overall and in the BIIF.

Kolten Wong ran for three touchdowns and Leon Peralto kicked three field goals to lift Kamehameha to a 44-6 victory over host Kohala yesterday. Kamehameha is 6-0, 4-0. Kohala is 1-3 overall and in the BIIF.
