Advertiser Staff

Local jazz with a view continues tonight at the Hanohano Room's weekly Live Jazz Fridays. Basking in the chill blue light of the Sheraton Waikiki's sky-high Cobalt Lounge tonight are the DeShannon Higa Band and vocalist Rocky Brown. The music starts at 9 p.m. Champagne specials and a selection of swanky pupu are served until 1 a.m. Can't do the "dressy casual" thing tonight? The always swanky (you sense we're diggin' that word here?) Honolulu Jazz Quartet keeps it real at Live Jazz Fridays next week. Information: 921-4600.

MODERN LIFE

TOO GIDDY FOR GREATNESS?

Maybe you can never be too rich or too thin, but can you be too happy for your own good? University of Illinois psychologist Edward Diener, who has studied the topic so thoroughly he's often called Dr. Happiness, cites evidence suggesting ultra-happy people may pay surprising costs. It has been well documented that happy adults tend to live longer, make more friends and do better at work, but the most happy college students aren't as conscientious as moodier classmates, Diener's studies show: "The '10s' in happiness may spend more time at the bars, dancing and drinking," he speculates.

FINAL WORD
