Forum to discuss Leeward schools

The Board of Education will hold a community meeting Oct. 4 at Momilani Elementary for the Nanakuli, Pearl City and Waipahu school complexes.

The discussion will focus on student achievement, including standards-based reform, assessment and accountability, and system restructuring.

The forum will be in the cafeteria from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

BOOK SALE OCT. 16 IN PEARL CITY

The Friends of Pearl City Library will conduct a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Pearl City Public Library.

Proceeds will benefit various library programs.

Prices start at 25 cents for paperbacks and children's books. Hardcovers and videotapes will sell for $1 each.

STORYTIMES SET AT KAPOLEI LIBRARY

Kapolei Public Library will host Fall Storytimes for children Oct. 3 through Dec. 17.

The events will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Children's Room. Monday is Toddler Storytime for 2- and 3-year-olds accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Thursday and Saturday Storytime is for children ages 3 and up, also accompanied by an adult.

BENEFIT CAR WASH AT LUTHERAN SITES

Lutheran High School of Hawai'i students, faculty and friends will hold their sixth "Free Mega Car Wash" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at six locations:

  • Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 638 N. Kuakini St., Liliha.

  • Messiah Lutheran Church, 91-679 Fort Weaver Road, 'Ewa Beach.

  • Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1404 University Ave., Manoa.

  • Our Savior Lutheran Church, 98-1098 Moanalua Road, 'Aiea.

  • St. Mark Lutheran Church, 45-725 Kamehameha Highway, Kane'ohe.

  • Trinity Lutheran Church, 1615 California Ave., Wahiawa.

    The students have collected pledges for the fundraiser, with proceeds going to the school's scholarship program, athletic department and class expenses. Although the wash is free, drivers may make tax-exempt donations.

    ALUMNI TO HOST UH HOMECOMING

    The University of Hawai'i Alumni Association will host a homecoming celebration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Gordon Biersch Restaurant in Aloha Tower Marketplace.

    UH athletics director Herman Frazier, head football coach June Jones and defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville will be in attendance.

    Tickets are $20 and $15 for UHAA members. Call the Office of Alumni Relations at 956-2586 for more information.

    TOYOTA PROGRAM HELPS EDUCATION

    In its first two years, Toyota-Hawai'i's "On Board for Education" program awarded certificates worth $576,500 in school supplies, with awards last year going to 255 public schools, 188 private schools or preschools, and 18 home-schoolers.

    This year's program began Sept. 1 and will donate educational supply certificates to a teacher and a student, at $100 apiece, as designated by the buyer of a new Toyota Sienna minivan or Highlander during three 2005-06 sales periods: September-October, January-February and May-June.

    Certificates can be redeemed at Education Works at Dole Cannery in Honolulu or online at EducationWorksHawaii.com to buy what is needed. They also may be used at Easy Music Center at 1108 Ke'eaumoku St.
