Cornell midfielder honored for stellar week

Cornell senior midfielder Kara Ishikawa was named the school's Athlete of the Week after scoring two goals and adding two assists in two wins over the weekend.
Ishikawa, a 2002 graduate of Iolani from Mililani, scored in a 3-2 win over Canisius College on Friday. She scored in the 63rd minute when she deflected a clear and fired the ball into the right corner of the net from 10 yards out.
She scored a goal and added two assists in a 4-0 win over Lafayette on Sunday.
Ishikawa, who has recorded a point in every game this year for the Big Red, was selected to the Ivy League women's soccer Honor Roll this week.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
• Duke sophomore goalkeeper Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04 of Hawai'i Kai) was named the Duke adidas Classic Defensive MVP last weekend.
Lipsher did not allow a goal in two tournament games, and has allowed two in seven games this season.
• Azusa Pacific (Calif.) junior forward/midfielder Mari Kasamoto (Iolani of Honolulu) scored in the 11th minute in a 2-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Friday.
Junior midfielder Jolie Nitta (Mililani '02) scored in the 9th minute in a 4-0 win over Holy Names on Saturday. Holy Names (Oakland, Calif.) senior defender Allison Lee (Kaiser '02) started the game.
Nitta assisted on the third goal in a 3-0 win over Chapman Sept. 9.
• Lake Forest (Ill.) freshman forward Jaymie Honold (Kapolei '05) scored twice and had an assist in an 8-0 win over Knox College (Galesburg, Ill.) on Sept. 10.
Honold scored in the 28th and 40th minutes, and picked up her assist in the 51st minute.
• Boise State sophomore defender/midfielder Allison Tsuchida (Punahou '04) was named to the Soccer Etc. Nike Classic All-Tournament Team last weekend as a defender.
Boise State tied Eastern Washington, 1-1, Sunday, and beat Northern Arizona, 1-0, Friday.
Tsuchida was also named the co-Defensive MVP of the La Quinta Inn and Suites Mountain Classic hosted by Northern Arizona University earlier this month.
BSU junior forward Liane Tom (Mililani '03) has started all seven games and recorded two assists this season.
FOOTBALL
• Washington senior linebacker Joe Lobendahn (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) tied for the team lead with seven tackles and made his first career interception in a 34-6 win over Idaho on Saturday.
Lobendahn's interception set up a touchdown in the third quarter.
Sophomore nose tackle Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis '03 of Honolulu) also had seven tackles, and junior defensive tackle Donny Mateaki (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) had three, including two sacks for 18 yards.
• Tennessee senior defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona (Kealakehe '01 of Kailua, Kona) had three tackles, including a 9-yard sack, in a 16-7 loss to Florida on Saturday.
• Southern California freshman linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '05) had a fourth-quarter interception, returning it 10 yards, in a 70-17 blowout of Arkansas Saturday.
Maiava recorded three tackles.
• Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) sophomore running back Chris Ahsing (Campbell of 'Ewa Beach) rushed for 150 yards and two scores in a 43-28 win over visiting University of La Verne on Saturday. Ahsing carried 25 times and scored both touchdowns in the second quarter to give Whitworth a 29-7 lead at the half.
• Northern Colorado freshman linebacker Dylan Moss (Saint Louis of Honolulu) had six tackles (five assists) in a 35-19 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.
• Former Saint Louis quarterback Jason Gesser is scheduled to make his first professional start Saturday, according to the Canadian Press.
Gesser plays for the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders, who will play Hamilton.
"As a backup quarterback you've got to be ready as soon as your number's called and so I should be ready," said Gesser, 27, to the Canadian Press. "I was a little bit nervous yesterday but I've been doing this for how many years and I haven't had a start since Washington State was in the Rose Bowl," he said. "I started a lot of games in my career and I can get back into the flow of things really easy."
He completed all three of his passes and completed a 30-yard touchdown pass in a back-up role in a 16-11 win over Edmonton on Sept. 10.
Starter Henry Burris is injured.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
• UC Irvine senior middle blocker Amanda Vazquez (Moanalua '02 of Honolulu) was named to the Campus USA Credit Union Classic All-Tournament Team at the University of Florida.
Vazquez totaled 22 kills, two aces, 11 digs and eight blocks in two matches over the weekend.
She is fourth on the UCI career list with 282 block assists.
• Kansas Wesleyan freshman setter Doris Kometani (Kamehameha '05 of Kane'ohe) was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Setter of the Week on Sept. 13.
Kometani averaged eight assists per game over nine games for the Coyotes. She also averaged 3.56 digs per game, while adding 13 aces, including eight in a match against Stephens College.
• Princeton freshman outside hitter Kelli Grobe (Iolani '05 of Kane'ohe) was named to the Colgate Tournament All-Tournament team that concluded Sept. 10.
She had 21 kills in three matches over that weekend.
• Alcorn State (Miss.) freshman Monique Blando (Lahainaluna '05) had 11 kills in a 28-30, 30-25, 30-25, 30-24 loss to Southern on Sept. 14.
• Former Farrington players have made their way to Barton County Community College (Great Bend, Kan.).
Sophomore middle Sunshine Misa-Uli (Farrington '04) led the Cougars in four categories in a 30-16, 30-20, 32-30 win over Dodge City (Kan.) on Sept. 14.
Misa-Uli paced Barton with 16 kills and three aces, and tied for the lead in digs with 11 and blocks with eight.
Freshman outside hitter/middle Tanya Sale (Farrington '05 of Honolulu) had 14 kills and seven blocks, and tied Misa-Uli with 11 digs.
Also on the team are freshmen outside hitters Matalasi Taua'a (Farrington of Honolulu) and Meilene Cenido (Farrington of Honolulu), who had eight blocks.
MEN'S SOCCER
• Santa Clara junior forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula) scored in the 86th minute to send the game into overtime in a 2-1 win against Stanford on Friday.
DeVey tied the game after receiving a pass, taking two quick touches and driving a low shot under the Cardinal goalkeeper.
• Southern Methodist senior forward/midfielder Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '02 of Kapolei) scored in a 1-1 tie with Loyola Marymount in the SMU Mi Cocina Classic on Saturday.
Hashimoto scored in the 43rd minute.
Loyola Marymount sophomore defender Stephen Carlson (Punahou '04 of Honolulu) started the game but received a red card in the 85th minute.
• Hawai'i players at Santa Rosa (Calif.) Junior College are contributing to its 6-0 record.
Freshman forward Patrick Egloria (Mililani '04) scored three goals with four assists, freshman midfielder Ryan Bibilone (Leilehua '05) has one goal and three assists, freshman forward Kimo Ballesteros (Baldwin '04) has two goals and two assists, and freshman midfielder Brady Nunes (Baldwin '05) has one goal and one assist.
Also on the team is Holden Lau (Roosevelt '05), a freshman defender.
MEN'S WATER POLO
• UCLA senior David Pietsch (Punahou) scored a combined seven goals against Bucknell and UC Irvine as the Bruins swept their matches on day one of the SoCal Tournament in Irvine last weekend. The Bruins defeated Bucknell, 12-2, and needed overtime to defeat the Anteaters, 9-7.
Eight games into the season, Pietsch leads the team with 18 goals.
C.J. Smith (Punahou) has one goal this season.
MEN'S GOLF
• Wesleyan (Middleton, Conn.) freshman Eli Wilson (Punahou '05) topped his team with a tie for eighth place after posting a 73-74—147 at the Skidmore Invitational at the par-72 Saratoga Springs Park Course at Sarasota, N.Y., Sept. 11 to 12.
WOMEN'S GOLF
• Willamette (Salem, Ore.) freshman Whitney Ueno (Hilo) won her second straight individual title in the Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.) leg of the Northwest Conference Southern Four-Way Tournament Sunday at the Quail Valley Golf Course.
Ueno earned medalist honors by beating the field by 10 strokes, shooting a 2-over-par 74.
Ueno shot a 4-over-par 76 to win Linfield's leg at Michelbrook Country Club Sept. 13.
