Florida's Slater close to dethroning Irons

Florida's Kelly Slater moved a step closer to clinching his seventh surfing world championship by winning the Boost Mobile Pro yesterday.
The final day of the week-long event was completed in 3-foot waves at Trestles off San Clemente, Calif.
Slater defeated Australia's Phil MacDonald in the final, 15.4-15.0. It was the eighth contest on the 2005 World Championship Tour, and Slater has won four.
Kaua'i's Andy Irons, the three-time defending world champion, was eliminated by MacDonald in the quarterfinals yesterday, and is a distant No. 2 in the world rankings.

SENIORS WELL OFF PACE
Kula, Maui's Rose Pagan shot an 84 yesterday and is 18 shots off the pace after the second round of the USGA Senior Women's Amateur at the Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y.
Twenty-seven golfers didn't complete the round because of darkness.
Pagan has a two-round total of 169.
In the USGA Senior Amateur Championship for men at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga., Kailua's Gary Haynie didn't qualify for match play after shooting an 88 for a two-round total of 167.

BRAZILIAN BEATS JHUN
Brazil's Thales Leite defeated Hawai'i's Ronald Jhun in the main event of the Rumble on the Rock Qualifier mixed martial arts card Saturday night at the Blaisdell Center Arena.
Leite was awarded the victory early in the third round when the bout was stopped because of a cut on Jhun's nose.
In the semi-main event, Mike Aina of the Big Island defeated Kaleo Kwan of Waimanalo by unanimous decision.
