Love, dogs and martinis in Italian

An Italian film festival continues through the weekend at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

The festival, dubbed Best of New Italian Cinema Events (NICE), is co-sponsored by Istituto Italiano di Cultura, San Francisco; NICE, a nonprofit cultural association in Florence, Italy; the Friends of Italy Society of Hawaii; Ferrari/Maserati of Hawaii; and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort and Spa.

Admission is $7 general, $6 military and students, $5 for Academy of Arts members. All films are unrated, and in Italian, with English subtitles.

The films:

  • "Round Trip (A/R: Andata & Ritorno)"; directed by Marco Ponti, 2004, 106 minutes

    A romantic comedy/heist flick: Dante is a bike messenger who journeys from Turin to Barcelona; Nina, a flight attendant, is grounded in Italy. The two meet and fall in love. Enter the loan sharks who had lent Dante some money. Director Ponti will be in attendance to present the film.

  • "Just Do It (Fate come noi)"; directed by Francesco Apolloni, 2003, 90 minutes

    Young pals Bove and Pechino find adventure and life lessons from unlikely sources in Rome.

    4 and 7:30 p.m. today

  • "Love, Lies, Kids & Dogs (Uomini, donne, bambini e ... cani)"; directed by Eleonora Giorgi, 2003, 93 minutes

    In the 1960s, young parents Anna and Giovanni, their five children and their dogs and cats face difficulties in their attempt to be a happy family.

    1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

  • "How to Make a Martini (Come si fa un Martini)"; directed by Kiko Stella, 2001, 100 minutes

    A collection of short stories built around a philosophical debate about how to make a martini.

    4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday

  • "Runaway (Il fuggiasco)"; directed by Andrea Manni, 2003, 97 minutes

    Based on the true story of Massimo Carlotti, a political activist wrongly arrested for murder. The script was co-written by Carlotti.
