Olympian Stein Metzger and partner Jake Gibb drove away from last week's AVP Nissan Series Chicago Open volleyball tournament with more than a new car.
Metzger, a Punahou graduate and UCLA volleyball All-American, won the season-long 2005 Nissan Championship Series with his partner. He and Gibb, in their first year together on the beach, were the only men's team to win four AVP events and earned $93,500 apiece.
They clinched the title with a win against fifth-seeded Todd Rogers and former Rainbow Sean Scott in the winners' bracket semifinals at Chicago.
"That was our game to seal it," Metzger said. "We came out like it was our biggest final ever."
Rogers and Scott came back to win the Chicago title, but Metzger's and Gibb's "consolation" prize was a Nissan Xterra for their series championship. The series was a season-long points contest with special emphasis placed on the five events televised live on NBC.
Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won the women's series after capturing nine 2005 titles, including the last in Chicago.
