Honoka'a junior Sean Maekawa finished fifth Monday at the American Junior Golf Association's Fidelity Investments Junior Open in San Ramon, Calif.

Maekawa, last year's BIIF champion, shot rounds of 76-70-73 for a 219 total at The Bridges Golf Club. California's Roberto Galletti Jr. won by shooting a final round of 3-under 69 for a 213 total.

Kellen Watabu (77-239) tied for 36th and Sean Ogawa (79-246), 53rd. Both are from Kapa'a.

In the girls division, state high school champion Christine Kim, a Waiakea senior, took 12th with scores of 87-77-77—241. The winner was Nicole Ferrero of California at 70-226.

Hawai'i's Tadd Fujikawa and Elyse Okada were awarded exemptions to play in the AJGA's 2005 Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior event in Mobile, Ala., last week. The event was postponed until Oct. 7 because of Hurricane Katrina.

KO OLINA TO HOST BENEFIT TOURNAMENT

Ko Olina Golf Club will host the Ko Olina Rally For A Cure Golf Tournament on Oct. 1. The event is presented by Golf For Women magazine and benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Format is four-person teams in a modified scramble with a shotgun start. The day starts with a Super Demo sponsored by Nike, Titleist, Cobra, Cleveland, Ping, Taylor-Made and Callaway. There is also a Junior Golf Clinic by U.S. Kids Golf, contests and prize giveaways.

The tournament concludes with an awards celebration, where attendees can sample beers, wines and heavy pupu provided by Roy's Ko Olina, the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa and others.

Entry fee is $125 per person. Registration deadline is Sept. 24, with the field limited to 120 participants. Beginners are welcome. There is no requirement to have a foursome. Single players will be grouped into a team.

Seventy-five percent of the tournament's net proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Hawai'i affiliate, a resource for information and educational programs. Remaining proceeds will be distributed to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation National Grant Program and other local organizations that offer breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs.

Founded in 1996, the Rally For A Cure has provided the Foundation more than $16 million.

The tournament is part of Ko Olina's year-round schedule of events promoting Play Golf America, a national initiative offering opportunities for beginners to learn the game and offers current golfers special events.

KLIPPER TO HOST STATE SENIOR AMATEUR EVENT

Kane'ohe Klipper will be the site of the 2005 State Senior Amateur Championship Nov. 5 and 6. The Championship is a 36-hole, no-cut, stroke-play event.

To be eligible, men must be at least 55 and women, 50. Entry fee is $165, which includes green fees, carts, practice balls, dinner after play on Saturday and awards luncheon Sunday.

Last year's champions were Jim Ono (81-152) and Marcie Rudich (87-168).
