The Iolani School Math Club will host its fifth annual Iolani Intermediate Math Meet on Oct. 8, when teams of five students from O'ahu public and private schools will compete in individual and team events.

The event is free to participating schools and relies on donations from individuals and organizations. Donations may be made to Iolani Schools for the Iolani Intermediate Math Meet through Li Ann Wada, faculty coordinator, 563 Kamoku St., Honolulu, HI 96826.

MAUI CC DEGREE PLAN RECOGNIZED

Maui Community College was recognized as a candidate for accreditation by the West Association of Schools and Colleges for a Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Business and Information Technology.

The candidacy approval for the ABIT Program is effective through July 14, 2009, and permits MCC to enroll students and implement the baccalaureate program this fall.

This is the first time that a bachelor's degree will be offered by a community college in the UH system.

BUSHNELL SUBJECT OF TALK BY DAWS

Gavan Daws, author of "Shoal of Time" and "Land and Power in Hawaii," will speak at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre at 7 p.m. Sept. 20.

His presentation titled "Bushnell as Friend and Writer" is the first evening event of the college's Common Book Program this year. O.A. Bushnell's "Ka'a'awa," a historical novel set on the windward side of O'ahu in the 1850s, is this year's Common Book.

UH LIBRARY SETS RARE-ITEMS EXHIBIT

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Hamilton Library is preparing an exhibit of 300 rare objects, including limited-circulation books and maps in the library's preservation collection, some of which were salvaged from last year's flooding.

"Making Connections: Treasures of the University of Hawai'i Library," featuring maps damaged by the flood and later fully restored, will open Sept. 18 at the UH-Manoa Art Gallery.

It will be the library's first exhibition from its rare and special collections.

KEIKI KARNIVAL AT KAMILOIKI SCHOOL

Kamiloiki Elementary School in Hawai'i Kai will host a Keiki Karnival from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 30 on the school grounds.

Proceeds will help pay for computer upgrades and educational materials for Kamiloiki's classrooms.

The carnival will feature rides, food, drinks and games for kids and the family.
