Today is Labor Day. Here are a few facts tied to the holiday, courtesy of the Census:

  • 149.1 million people 16 or older were part of the nation's labor force in May 2005. That's 80 million men and 69.1 million women.

  • The annual median pay for male full-time, year-round workers in 2003 was $40,668. Women earned $30,724.

  • There are 6.5 million teachers in the United States, 718,000 hairstylists and cosmetologists, 179,000 musicians and singers, including The Makaha Sons, left, and 96,000 service-station attendants.

    MARSH NEEDS YOUR HELP

    The Hawai'i Nature Center needs a hand in cleaning up and restoring Pouhala Marsh, a wetland habitat in Waipahu, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

    Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed and mangrove. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, a towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required.
