Scott wins in beach volleyball

Punahou graduate Sean Scott and Todd Rogers beat Karch Kiraly and Punahou alum Mike Lambert, 21-16, 21-16, yesterday in the men's final of the AVP Nissan Series Chicago Open.

Scott and Rogers, who also won the AVP Boulder Open last weekend, split $42,000 — the largest domestic purse on the men's side in pro beach volleyball this season.

Scott and Rogers, seeded fifth, reached the final after defeating third-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings in the semifinals, 19-21, 21-15, 16-14. Kiraly and Lambert, seeded fourth, ousted top-seeded Stein Metzger and Jake Gibb in the semifinals, 28-26, 17-21, 17-15.


VOLLEYBALL

NO. 8 HPU LOSES FIRST

Sharea Drawn had 24 kills as host Cal State San Bernardino beat No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific, 28-30, 30-27, 31-33, 30-27, 15-12, yesterday in the final of the Coyote Classic Women's Volleyball Tournament.

Barbara Martin had 26 kills and 18 digs, and Flavia Brakling added 17 kills and 14 digs for HPU (9-1).

Earlier, Martin and Brakling each had 15 kills as HPU beat Cal State Bakersfield, 30-28, 30-27, 30-17.

HILO WINS IN ALASKA

Taina Savage had 26 kills and 23 digs, and Kahealani Silva contributed 55 digs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat North Dakota, 31-29, 30-21, 32-34, 30-25, yesterday in the title match of the Aspen Hotels Invitational at Anchorage, Alaska.

Rose Ramsey added 17 kills for UHH (6-4).


SURFING

ISLE SURFERS ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Sunny Garcia advanced to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro Japan.

The third round was completed yesterday in 6- to 8-foot waves at Hebara Beach, Japan.

Andy Irons beat California's Dane Reynolds, 16.83-7.73; Bruce Irons beat Brazil's Marcelo Nunes, 14.87-10.57, and Garcia beat Australia's Nathan Hedge, 13.0-9.67.
