Prayer at New Hope has a hip touch

New Hope Leeward's hip-hop worship team is one of many ways that church members reach out. The church began two years ago, and now meets in the Waipahu Town Center, in the old Safeway building. About 1,900 people attend its weekly services.

Name of church: New Hope Leeward

Our denomination: Foursquare

Where we are: Waipahu Town Center, 94-050 Farrington Highway, #A-1

Our numbers: 1,900 attend weekly

Our pastor: Pastor Mike Lwin

What we believe: As an additional location of New Hope Leeward, the church follows the same evangelical Christian belief structure of that church, in which the Bible is considered the literal word of God. The church puts an emphasis on contemporary style worship services and offers myriad social ministries. Their family-centered approach includes a children's Bible program, junior high and high school programs and women's and men's ministry groups.

Our history: New Hope Leeward was birthed two years ago as a satellite site of New Hope O'ahu. Rented facilities at the Filipino Community Center and the Leeward Community College Theater weren't large enough to house the growing congregation or ministry groups, so last summer New Hope Leeward moved to the former Safeway building in the Waipahu Town Center. This location has nearly 30,000 square feet; seating for 800 people; and space for youth ministry, women's and men's ministry gatherings.

What we're excited about: New Hope Leeward will launch additional Sunday morning services on Sept. 11 in the Pearl Highlands Movie Theaters above Sam's Club in Pearl City. Sunday services will be at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., with children's ministry programs at both services. There will be a special junior high youth rally at 10 a.m. Sundays.

What's special about us: They give away free breakfast and lunch after every Sunday service.
