'SUNSET ON THE BEACH' REDUX FEATURES KAYO HATTA TRIBUTE

Wet and windy weather rained on last weekend's plans for Sunset on the Beach events in Waikiki, but it's a green light for this weekend at Queen's Surf Beach.

Tonight it's a tribute — rescheduled from last weekend — to Honolulu-born director Kayo Hatta, who died in July. Her short film "Fishbowl" and acclaimed 1994 feature "Picture Bride" will be screened.

Also today, there's a Halloween costume contest: Entrants should line up at the table beside the stage for judging in age categories up to 14. Adults and kids can enter the Best Tiki Costume contest sponsored by Tiki's Grill & Bar.

Island favorite Kapono Beamer will perform at 5:30 p.m. today, too.

Tomorrow's movie is "Ghostbusters," the classic adventure comedy starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver.

Bring your pre-carved pumpkins for a 4:30 p.m. contest with categories such as most original, scariest, happiest and most Hawaiian.

Sunset on the Beach begins at 4 p.m. each day with food booths and entertainment. Films hit the screen after the sun goes down. Admission is free. 923-1094.

INCY-WINCY SPIDER CAKES TO GOBBLE UP FOR HALLOWEEN

Get into the Halloween spirit in the kitchen, too, with fun and yummy treats for those kiddie (and adult) parties. Here's a recipe courtesy of Gwin Grogan, from the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram.

SPIDER CAKES

MAKES 24 CUPCAKES

Although this version is made with regular-size cupcakes, it would be just as easy to do in miniature by baking the cake mix in a mini-muffin pan and topping with the tiny version of Oreos.

24 cupcakes made from your favorite flavor of cake mix

1 container prepared chocolate frosting

24 chocolate sandwich cookies

Black licorice laces

Miniature candy-coated chocolate pieces

Spread frosting on each of the cupcakes and top with one cookie. Cut licorice into about 2-inch lengths. Insert three licorice laces under one side of the cookie, then repeat with more laces on the other side to resemble spider legs. Dip chocolate candies in icing and "glue" on onto spiders for eyes.

HIFF'S FINAL SCREENINGS PLUS BEST TV ADS

It's the final weekend of the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival, which is celebrating its 25th year.

The world champion Little Leagers will attend today's baseball film, "Rounding First," at 3:30 p.m. at the Hawai'i Theatre.

A related HIFF event, focusing on TV commercials, is happening from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.
