TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. Just when the world seems ready to forget "ER," it comes up with a remarkable episode like the one rerunning tonight. This hour grabbed viewers and brought an Emmy for guest star Ray Liotta. The entire episode is done in real time, which means 42 minutes of program represents only 42 minutes of life. At the start, Liotta's character is in the waiting room, clearly upset. We soon learn that he's an alcoholic in liver failure. The scenes that follow are remarkable in their restraint and power. With subtle passion, Liotta has us caring deeply about a misspent life.

OF NOTE

"The Mask of Zorro" (1998), 6 p.m., TBS. With a new "Zorro" movie coming out soon, we can settle back and catch the most recent original. It tries to do too much, from silly comedy to tough violence, but it has a lush feel and a great cast with Anthony Hopkins as the old Zorro, Antonio Banderas as the new one and Catherine Zeta-Jones as an enticing beauty. It's great casting, despite an oddity: In this Latino tale, two of the three stars (Hopkins and Zeta-Jones) were born in Wales.

"Alias," 7 p.m., ABC. Syd and Grace are chased by mercenaries.

"Joey," 7 p.m., NBC. In a so-so rerun, the work on Joey's movie is dominated by a bratty kid. One co-star (John Larroquette) brown-noses him, but Joey resists.

"Will & Grace," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Here's a rerun from last season. Grace is so hesitant about her date with handsome Nick (Edward Burns) that she brings Will along. Meanwhile, Karen tries to set Jack up with the neighborhood bird-watcher (Luke Perry).

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. One person on a hill was apparently killed by a fireball, but another may still be alive.

"Night Stalker," 8 p.m., ABC. At a school that's had violence, Kolchak meets a troubled kid and his distant, perplexing dad.

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. A woman working at her family's Korean deli has disappeared. Investigators find that she was troubled by a desire to break free of her culture's old ways.
