UH alone in first after soccer win at San Jose

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team, led by freshman goalie Kori Lu, shut out host San Jose State, 2-0, yesterday and took sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference.
Lu, who made 10 saves, earned her third shutout this season. Sophomore forward Gabrielle Bohlman scored on a loose ball from close range off a Natasha Kai assist in the 51st minute.
Krisha Kai scored her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute to seal the win.
Hawai'i improved to 8-7-2 overall and 4-1 in the WAC. San Jose State is 3-11-2 overall, 3-2 WAC.
The Rainbow Wahine went 3-1 on a road trip that started in Ruston, La., and ended in San Jose, Calif.
Hawai'i returns home for its final two regular-season games against WAC opponents Nevada (Friday) and Fresno State (Oct. 30).
BASEBALL
UH PICKS KOMEIJI
Keith Komeiji, former University of Hawai'i and Kaiser High catcher, has been named assistant baseball coach at the school.
He was a volunteer coach at UH the past four years.
"He's done an outstanding job the last four years as our volunteer and has earned this opportunity with his hard work," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "He'll do a great job for us as a hitting coach and will continue to coach our catchers."
As a volunteer coach, Komeiji worked with catchers and hitters and also coordinated camps.
Komeiji, 42, played at UH in 1982 and was drafted in the first round of the 1983 Major League Baseball winter draft by the Seattle Mariners. He also was a two-time all-state high school player.
UH opens its 2006 season with a series against San Diego State Feb. 1 to 4 at Les Murakami Stadium.
GOLF
MCLACHLIN ADVANCES
Former Hawai'i state high school champion Parker McLachlin was one of 89 players to advance to the PGA Qualifying School's second stage yesterday.
McLachlin closed with a 1-under-par 71 to finish third in the first-stage qualifier at Dayton Valley Country Club, outside Reno. He had a four-day total of 13-under 275, two shots back of medalist Ben Portie, who closed with a 69.
The top 19 and ties advanced, along with 70 others at sites in Tampa Bay and Palm City, Fla., and Kannapolis, N.C.
The last seven of 14 first-stage events will be next week. Second-stage tournaments are next month and the final Q-School will be Dec. 1 to 6 in Orlando, Fla.
Leilehua graduate Kevin Warrick shot 77-294 and finished tied for 56th at the TPC of Tampa Bay, failing to advance.
'SWING AT CRIME' BENEFIT
Coral Creek and Waikele will be today's sites for the third annual "Take a Swing at Crime in the Sony Open Par-3." The benefit series runs through Dec. 11 on O'ahu. Golfers who play designated courses on the benefit dates can participate on one of the par-3 holes.
For a $10 donation, golfers receive a daily ticket to the 2006 Sony Open in Hawai'i in January, and a chance to win prizes and qualify as a finalist for the Sony Open Million Dollar Shot competition.
The rest of the qualifying schedule:
Oct. 29—Mililani and Royal Kunia; Nov. 5—Pearl and Luana Hills; Nov. 13—Hawai'i Kai and Barber's Point. More dates will be scheduled through Dec. 11 at the same courses.
WAIKOLOA HOSTS WOMEN
The fourth annual Waikoloa Women's Golf Challenge is today and tomorrow at the Waikoloa Beach Resort.
The tournament begins at 8 a.m. both days.
More than 50 women are expected to compete in the tournament, a benefit for the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Foundation and the Waikoloa Foundation.
TENNIS
SHAW, AIKAWA MOVE ON
University of Hawai'i's Fenja Shaw and Kana Aikawa advanced to the round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Tennis Championships at San Diego yesterday.
Shaw, who received a first-round bye, defeated Ashley Dunbar of Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. Aikawa defeated Tamara Tanner of Loyola Marymount, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, in the first round and Sophia Vogt of San Diego, 7-5, 6-0, in the round of 32.
UH's Chloe Bihag lost to Linda Tempelfelde of UNLV, 6-2, 6-2, and Hawai'i's Julia Sandborn lost to Casey Cross of UC Riverside, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 32. UH's Erin Katayama lost in the first round to Emmanuelle Tabatruong of Long Beach State, 6-3, 6-3.
UH'S SCEATS ADVANCES
Hawai'i's Ryan Sceats defeated Stanford's Ken Kao, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA North Western Region Tennis Championships at Santa Clara, Calif., yesterday.
Washington's Daniel Chu defeated Jarrod Diepraam, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 64. UH's Jeff Fitch beat Andrew Hogan of San Francisco, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, before losing to James Pade of Stanford, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 64.
UH's Derrick Lajola, Yasuo Sakurai, Chad Faulk, Byron Weinberg and Brent Hunter lost in the round of 128.
UH's doubles teams were more successful: Faulk and Weinberg, Hunter and Sakurai and Diepraam and Sceats won round- of-64 matches.
