Mahelona nominated for top lineman honor

Tennessee senior defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona, a 2001 Kealakehe graduate, is one of 12 semifinalists for the 36th Rotary Lombardi Award, given to the college lineman of the year.
Mahelona anchors a defense that has not allowed a 100-yard rusher this season. He has at least one tackle for loss in 13 of the 18 games he's played at Tennessee.
MORE FOOTBALL
Washington senior linebacker Joe Lobendahn (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) had a team-high 13 tackles in a 45-21 loss to Oregon Saturday.
Sophomore nose tackle Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis '03 of Ho-nolulu) had four and junior defensive end Brandon Ala (Kamehameha '02 of Wai'anae) added three.
Oregon juniors Enoka Lucas (center, Kamehameha '02) and Paluni Ma Sun (right guard, Kahuku), and redshirt freshman Max Unger (left tackle, Hawai'i Prep '04) started on the offensive line.
Colorado sophomore linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) recorded four tackles, including two solo, in a 42-17 loss to No. 2 Texas Saturday.
Senior defensive tackle Vaka Manupuna (Saint Louis '01 of Kihei) had three tackles, including two solo.
Gavilan College (Gilroy, Calif.) sophomore wide receiver Shane Butcher (Saint Louis '03) caught the winning touchdown with 2:30 to play in a 23-22 win over De Anza College (Cupertino, Calif.) Saturday. Butcher caught four passes for 54 yards.
University of British Columbia receiver Marc Esteban (Kaiser '02) caught five passes for 60 yards in a 32-13 win over Regina Friday. However, Esteban injured his ankle and could be lost for the season.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Barton County Community College (Great Bend, Kan.) sophomore middle Sunshine Misa-Uli (Farrington '04) was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Player of the Week for Oct. 2 to 8.
Misa-Uli recorded three double-doubles in eight matches for the 12th-ranked Cougars.
In Barton's upset of No. 2 Miami-Dade, she recorded 18 kills and 13 digs. For the entire week, Misa-Uli totaled 81 kills, 59 blocks and 76 digs.
UC Santa Barbara sophomore setter Ashley Dutro (attended Punahou, from Honolulu) set a school rally-scoring record with 66 assists in a 30-26, 26-30, 30-16, 30-24 victory over Cal State Northridge Friday.
She added a personal best 17 digs in a 30-25, 30-19, 27-30, 28-30, 15-12 win over Pacific Saturday.
College of Southern Idaho freshman outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru (Punahou '05) led the team with 14 kills and 13 digs in a 30-16, 30-18, 30-22 win over Dixie State College Friday.
Freshman libero Pohai Nu'uhiwa (Punahou '05) had 11 digs.
MEN'S SOCCER
Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) sophomore midfielder/defender Ricky Shinn (Pearl City '03 of Waipahu) scored in the 68th minute in a 4-2 loss to Linfield Oct. 12. Shinn's goal was off an assist by freshman defender/midfielder Jared Komo (Makua Lani Christian School of Kailua, Kona).
Gonzaga sophomore goalkeeper Vito Higgins (Academy of the Pacific '03 of Kailua) collected four saves in a 1-1 double-overtime tie with 21st-ranked San Francisco Friday.
Southern Methodist senior forward/midfielder Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '02 of Kapolei) scored his team-leading sixth goal in a 4-0 win over Florida International Sunday. He had the assist in a 1-0 win over Central Florida Friday.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
San Diego State freshman midfielder Mariko Strickland (Mid-Pacific '05 of Anahola, Kaua'i) had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over TCU Sunday. She scored the second goal of the game in the 57th minute.
Cornell senior midfielder Kara Ishikawa (Iolani '02 of Mililani) scored two goals, including the game-winner 2:28 into overtime, in a 2-1 win over Albany Sunday.
Ishikawa also scored the game-tying goal in the 51st minute when she beat the Albany goalkeeper from five yards out.
She was named to the Ivy League Honor Roll for her efforts.
Boise State junior forward Liane "Annie" Tom (Mililani '03) assisted on the game-winning goal in double overtime in a 3-2 win over Nevada Friday.
Three minutes into the second overtime period, she beat a defender and played a through ball down the middle into the path of teammate Kristin Hall, who scored.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Gonzaga sophomore Sarah Sheffield (Kea'au '04) tied for 17th place at the Taylormade/adidas Lady Aztec Fall Classic at the par-72, 6,259-yard Auld Course in Chula Vista, Calif., yesterday. She shot 78-74-78—230.
Portland junior Melanie Lee (Pearl City of Waipahu) tied for 33rd with 77-80-80—237.
Long Beach State sophomore Kira Murashige (Waiakea of Hilo) tied for 19th place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the par-72 Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
Murashige shot 82-72-75—229 at the tournament that ended Oct. 12.
Stanford freshman Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) tied for 33rd with 77-76-81—234.
Oregon State senior Leah Whiting (Waiakea of Hilo) tied for 52nd with 77-78-85—240.
Idaho sophomore Kelly Nakashima (Baldwin '04) tied for ninth place at the Bronco Fall Invitational at the par-71, 6,225-yard BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.
Nakashima shot 73-79-75—227 in the tournament that ended Oct. 11.
Portland State freshman Kayla Morinaga (Sacred Hearts '05 of Waipahu) tied for 51st with 83-78-84—245.
Portland junior Melanie Lee (Pearl City of Waipahu) tied for 53rd with 81-80-85—246.
Santa Clara senior Eriko Sato (Maryknoll of Honolulu), playing as an individual, tied for 70th with 86-82-87—255.
Willamette (Salem, Ore.) freshman Whitney Ueno (Hilo) won medalist honors at the Northwest Conference Women's Fall Classic, which concluded Monday at the par-72 Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Ore.
Ueno shot 72-75—147.
Puget Sound junior Emily Lau (Iolani '03) finished second with 77-80—157.
Ueno also captured the title for the Northwest Conference's Southern Four-Way Tournament, which concluded Oct. 11.
Ueno shot an 80 at Creekside Golf Course, in Salem, Ore., last week, the final stop in the four-course tournament that featured 18-hole rounds at each of the four southern school's home courses over the fall.
She won the title by 19 strokes.
CROSS COUNTRY
San Diego State senior Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll '02 of Honolulu) finished ninth (18:05) in the women's 5K in the Santa Clara Cross Country Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., Saturday.
Santa Clara freshman Mykah Norville (Ho'ala '05) finished 17th (25:46.80) in the men's 8K, running attached.
SOFTBALL
Tennessee freshman infielder Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05 of Wahiawa) got her first hit as a Lady Vol in a 2-0 win over Lee University (Cleveland, Tenn.) in the Lady Vol Fall Classic exhibition this past weekend.
Tennessee went 4-0 with victories over Lee (2-0), Tusculum (21-0, five innings), Vol State (7-1) and Memphis (6-0), while fielding a split squad in three of the four games.
Horiuchi had an RBI triple against Memphis.
