Man arrested in stolen vehicle

A man sitting in a stolen car was arrested early yesterday morning in Waipahu by a police officer who sensed something might be wrong.
The officer was responding to a domestic abuse call about 1:30 a.m. when he passed a car near the corner of Hiapo Street and Manager's Drive and noticed the driver's door was open and that one of the car's side windows had been smashed out.
He saw a man in the driver's seat working on the ignition. The police officer got out of his car, walked up to the parked car and checked the ignition. He found a key from another car jammed in the ignition.
The officer detained the man found in the car, contacted the car's registered owner and learned the car had been stolen.
The 25-year-old Waikele resident found in the car was arrested on suspicion of attempted car theft.
SHOTS WERE FIRED IN DOWNTOWN
Police yesterday were looking for a person who fired off several rounds from a gun in downtown Honolulu about 11 p.m. Sunday.
A witness who was walking through the area heard the shots and turned to look in the direction they came from but did not see anyone suspicious in the area, police said.
Police said the witness saw a late-model car drive away from the area but was unable to provide any other information about the vehicle or its occupants.
Officers were sent to the scene and recovered several spent shell casings.
BOY, 13, ACCUSED IN SEX ASSAULT
Police on Sunday arrested a 13-year-old boy for suspicion of first-degree sexual assault.
A 13-year-old girl who slept at the boy's home Saturday night and Sunday morning reported being assaulted by the boy, who turned himself in at the main police station.
He was released without charges pending further investigation.
SUSPECT HELD IN MOTORCYCLE THEFT
Police on Sunday arrested a man described as a "known criminal character" in connection with the theft of a motorcycle last month.
Members of the Wahiawa police district beach task force spotted a man operating a stolen motorcycle on Sept. 25. Officers tried to arrest him at a public restroom, but the man ignored orders to stop and sped off.
Because of the potential danger to the public and concerns that the motorcycle operator might injure himself, police chose not to get into a high-speed pursuit.
Task force members found the suspect yesterday and arrested him on suspicion of vehicle theft.
