Competition takes flight at Turtle Bay

Top amateur golfers such as Tadd Fujikawa, Shannon Tanoue, Sean Maekawa and Brandan Kop head more than 180 players entered in this week's Turtle Bay Amateur.

The 36-hole stroke-play tournament, with competition in championship, A, B and C flights, will be held at Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer and George Fazio courses Saturday and Sunday. It is the final points event for the Governor's Cup.

Matt Kodama, who won last year, has since turned professional and has been playing the mini-tour in Las Vegas.

YAMAMOTO TO DEFEND OCC SENIOR MEN'S TITLE

Defending champion George Yamamoto is scheduled to go for his fifth title at the Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational next week.

Seventy golfers are registered for the 36-hole tournament, which begins at 7 a.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Yamamoto, playing in the Super Seniors division (65-older), shot 73-73—146 to finish a stroke ahead of Senior (55-64) division winner Russ McGarry. Yamamoto also won the OCC title in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

JUNIOR CHIP & PUTT CONTEST AT TURTLE BAY

The Mutual of Omaha Drive, Chip & Putt Junior Challenge will be held Oct. 29 at Turtle Bay Resort.

Hawai'i is one of 105 stops throughout the United States and Canada.

The first 250 registrants in Hawai'i will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis from completed registration forms available at www.The GolfChannel.com, Turtle Bay Resort or by calling 293-8574.

Competitors will be in 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 age groups.
