Teams forfeit games in OIA

Waipahu has forfeited tomorrow night's varsity football homecoming game against Moanalua.

Waipahu athletic director Hartwell Lee Loy Jr. said the varsity is down to 19 players because roughly half the team has been suspended for one game for breaking team rules. The Marauders listed 44 players on their roster in August.

"We have 19 players and we think that's cutting it too short for the health and safety of our kids," Lee Loy said.

The junior varsity game between the schools is still on for tomorrow at Waipahu, but has been moved to 6:30 p.m.

"The good thing is we have one more game left with Kalaheo (next week)," Lee Loy said. "The bad thing is this was homecoming and the last (home) game for the seniors. But that's a lesson we all have to live by."

The forfeit means Moanalua finishes its regular season at 6-1. It had already secured a berth in the four-team White playoffs. The Menehunes have a bye next week, giving them two consecutive weeks off before the playoffs.

Waipahu will drop to 1-5.

Also, Kalani has forfeited Saturday's JV game at Campbell. The varsity game between the schools will be played at 6:30 p.m.

Kalani athletic director Greg Van Canfort said the JV team is down to 18 players from 32 at the outset of the season. He said players have been lost either to injuries, lacking required grades or lacking commitment to practices.
