For just the second time in school history, the Duke women's soccer team defeated then-No. 1 North Carolina, and sophomore goalkeeper Allison Lipsher played an integral role in the win.
Lipsher, a 2004 Punahou graduate from Hawai'i Kai, recorded four saves as the Blue Devils upset North Carolina, 2-1, Sunday.
"It was pretty cool. Like any big game, everyone rushed the field when it was over," she said. "Every year, we know we can beat them, it was just a matter of when. Everyone had a really good warm-up. At the half, no one was tired. We knew we could keep playing with them the whole 90 minutes."
The Blue Devils improved to 9-2-1 overall, 3-2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while the Tar Heels fell to 13-1-0, 5-1-0. In the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings, UNC fell to third, and Duke moved up to sixth.
In the overall series, North Carolina now leads 27-2-1.
Over the final 29 minutes of play, North Carolina had three scoring chances.
"It was definitely nervewracking," Lipsher said. "They have probably the best forwards in the country.
"It's pretty intimidating, seeing big names everywhere you look."
In 12 matches this season, the Duke defense has allowed five goals, and no opponent has scored more than one goal against the Blue Devils in a game.
"Their stands were filled," Lipsher said. "There was a little section in the corner that stood up and cheered after we won. That only makes the victory sweeter."
