WAI'ANAE — It was like turn-back-the-clock night.

The ninth-ranked Wai'anae Seariders looked like the running power of the past in knocking off No. 10 Kapolei, 42-18, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red football.

The Seariders (6-1 overall, 4-1 Red) steamrolled the Hurricanes (5-3, 4-2) for 341 yards rushing. Quarterback Henry Keomalu rushed for four touchdowns and passed for another to send Kapolei to its second consecutive loss.

"They just physically man-handled us from start to finish," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "Wai'anae is back, baby. I saw it firsthand tonight with the nice butt-whipping that they gave us."

It was also turn-off-the-clock night because the game clock and scoreboard was not operable for a crowd of about 3,000 at Raymond Torii Field.

Darius Fuller led a brigade of Wai'anae running backs with a game-high 117 yards on 13 carries. His 49-yard rush in the third quarter came after the Hurricanes pulled to 20-18. Fuller was caught from behind by Jameson Chee's diving tackle. But two plays later, Keomalu rushed off right tackle for a 1-yard TD to make it 27-18. Keomalu added two more rushing TDs in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

"The blocking was on top of it," Fuller said "(Our line) is the best, so far."

Curtis Jones had 88 yards on 11 rushes and Nui Stevens had 78 on nine, including a 13-yard TD run for the first score of the game.

Wai'anae's defense contained Kapolei's rushing to 68 yards. Quarterback Brad Padayao passed for 247 yards, including TD passes of 37 yards to Radford Raquedan and 19 to Aaron Santiago.

Wai'anae's defense was so dominant that it affected Hernandez's decision to try for the 2-point conversion when the Hurricanes closed to 20-12 in the third quarter and failed; the Seariders blocked a PAT in the first quarter.

"It goes back to they were man-handling us," Hernandez said. "Our line couldn't protect. We knew we had to go for two. We couldn't block 'em."

The Seariders capitalized on the first turnover of the game, when Bruce Cadirao recovered a muffed punt at the Kapolei 47. Five plays later, Stevens went up the middle for his touchdown run. Keomalu's PAT gave the Seariders a 7-0 lead.

But the Hurricanes stormed back, driving 80 yards on five plays with Raquedan scoring on a screen pass to the right from Padayao. Savalua Faliuga blocked Ama Gaea's PAT try to preserve the Seariders' lead at 7-6 after one quarter.

The Seariders added another TD in the second quarter, moving 80 yards on eight plays with Fuller hauling in a 22-yard scoring pass from Keomalu.

Wai'anae opened its lead to 20-6 when it started the third quarter with the first of four Keomalu TDs, a 1-yard run. But Kapolei pulled to 20-18 with back-to-back scores before Keomalu sealed it with TD runs of 1, 2 and 2 yards.
