Wales to head UH swim program

Victor Wales has been hired as the head swimming coach at the University of Hawai'i, athletic director Herman Frazier announced yesterday in a press release.
Wales, who spent the past four years as the head swimming and diving coach for the women's program at San Jose State, succeeds Mike Anderson.
Anderson's contract was not renewed after four seasons at UH.
"This is a great opportunity for me to work with the fine student-athletes at UH and help them achieve their goals," said Wales, whose athletes broke 17 school records at San Jose State.
Wales earned a bachelor's degree from UC Santa Barbara, where he earned All-America honors in 1990 and was a 10-time Big West Conference champion.
Wales has also coached at Arizona State, Santa Barbara and Illinois.
"Victor has the experience and work ethic necessary to take the swimming program to the next level," Frazier said.
SURFING
BALLARD BOUNCED
Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard was eliminated in the second round of the Rip Curl Malibu Pro yesterday.
The first and second rounds of the women's contest was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Malibu, Calif.
Ballard, who was ranked No. 4 prior to the event, was upset by Brazil's Jacqueline Silva and Australia's Trudy Todd in the second round (the top two from each heat advanced to the one-on-one third round).
Hawai'i surfers Megan Abubo, Melanie Bartels and Keala Kennelly advanced to the third round.
GOLF
WIE FEATURE ON NBC
Kapalua's Mark Rolfing, an NBC golf analyst who has followed Michelle Wie's career, said the network will produce a "Growing up with Mark and Michelle" feature to be shown on next week's broadcast of the Samsung World Championship.
It will include clips from their interviews over the past five years.
Wie will make her pro debut at the Oct. 13 to 16 tournament in Palm Desert, Calif.

BYUH WINS TWICE
Kenny Nicholas made 10 saves as No. 16 Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat No. 17 Redlands, 6-5, yesterday in the Claremont Convergence Water Polo Tournament at Claremont, Calif.
BYUH also beat Brown, 8-6.
