BYUH's Weng captures national honor

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Yu Chuan Weng was named NCAA Division II National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Weng, a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter, had consecutive 33-kill matches as the 21st-ranked Seasiders (13-1) went 1-1 against Hawai'i-Hilo. She had 26 digs and two block assists last Friday in a five-game loss and 11 digs, one block and one ace in a victory Saturday.

It was the second national honor for Weng, of Hsinchu, Taiwan. She won the award as a freshman in 2002. She also was named Pacific West Conference player of the week yesterday.


BASKETBALL

'TWILIGHT 'OHANA' SET

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's basketball teams will start fall practice with a "Twilight 'Ohana" on Oct. 14 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a variety of entertainment and activities. The women's scrimmage is scheduled for 9:30 p.m., followed by the men at 9:45 p.m. A 3-point shooting contest between the men and women and slam-dunk competition is at 9:15 p.m.

Admission is free.

SASADA ADVANCES

Defending champion Brian Sasada defeated Beau Yokomoto, 4 and 3, to advance to today's quarterfinals of the Turtle Bay Match Play Championship at the Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course.

Sasada, the tournament's top seed, will play John Lynch in the quarterfinals. No. 2 Larry Stubblefield, No. 3 Joey Tadeo and No. 4 Regan Lee also advanced.

Ron Kiaaina, the top seed in the senior division, received a bye into today's quarterfinals.

Play starts at 7 a.m. today.


SOCCER

CHING ON NATIONAL TEAM

Hale'iwa's Brian Ching, a member of Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, has been called up to the United States National Team for a game Saturday at Costa Rica.

Ching, a 27-year-old forward, has appeared in three World Cup qualifiers, and scored two goals.
