Rainbow Wahine sail to victory at Stanford

The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team won the two-day Bryson Regatta yesterday at Stanford, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine and Stanford tied with 78 points, but UH was awarded the victory with the most first-place finishes.

UH's Tinja Anderson-Mitterling and Becky Mabardy earned nine first-place finishes, and Shandy Buckley and Crystal Bronte added six more.

  • Kei Nishikori defeated 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in Japan's 2-1 victory over the United States in the fifth-place match at the Junior Davis Cup at Barcelona yesterday.

    Nishikori and Jun Mitsuhashi defeated Lajola and Damico Kellen, 6-1, 6-4, in doubles. In the first singles match, William Spencer of Team USA defeated Kita Fumiaki of Japan, 6-2, 6-3.

    France defeated the Czech Republic, 2-1, to win the under-16 boys event.

  • Matthew McDonough and Natasha Gilmour won elite men's and women's titles, respectively, at the Ko Olina Sprint Triathlon yesterday.

    McDonough completed the 660-meter (.41-mile) swim, 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) bike and 4.5-mile run in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 34.4 seconds. Gilmour finished in 1:34:24.4.
