Hawai'i soccer players in Elite Eight

New Mexico sophomore midfielder David Gualdarama and Southern Methodist senior forward Duke Hashimoto will have a chance to play in the Elite Eight of the Men's Division I NCAA Soccer Tournament.
Gualdarama, a 2004 Kamehameha graduate, helped the Lobos beat Cal State Northridge, 1-0, in overtime Saturday to clinch the program's first trip to the quarterfinals.
Hashimoto, a 2002 Iolani graduate, scored in a 3-1 win over UNC-Greensboro Sunday. He scored from 14 yards out in the 34th minute following a Spartan turnover.
New Mexico (16-1-3) hosts seventh-seeded California (15-3-2), and South Methodist (13-5-3) will play at fourth-seeded North Carolina (17-3-3) this weekend. Also in the Elite Eight are Maryland (17-4-1), Akron (18-1-3), Creighton (15-4-3) and Clemson (14-5-3).
NCAA VOLLEYBALL
Fourteen women's volleyball players from Hawai'i, excluding those playing for the University of Hawai'i, will compete in the NCAA Women's Division I Tournament that begins tomorrow.
Washington (26-1), with sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Aratani (Iolani '04) and freshman setter Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05), who is redshirting, plays Siena (20-11), which has freshman libero Kathi Kobayashi (Punahou '05) and freshman middle hitter Robin Beck (Punahou).
Colorado (15-12), with senior defensive specialist Krislen Morgado (Punahou), plays Colorado State (20-8).
Santa Clara (23-4), with sisters Kristen (senior setter, attended Maryknoll) and Michelle Luxton (freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist, Punahou '05), takes on Sacramento State (26-8).
Nevada (18-12), with sophomore defensive specialist Randi Salis (Kamehameha), plays Stanford (25-5).
Pepperdine (17-11), with junior libero Kekai Crabbe (Kamehameha '03) and sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Lecca Roberts (Seabury Hall '04), plays Brigham Young (25-3).
UC Santa Barbara (21-8), with sophomore setter Ashley Dutro (attended Punahou), plays Southern California (16-10).
Utah State (21-12), with sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Monarisa Ale (Kahuku '04), plays Arizona (22-5).
Utah (22-8), with freshman defensive specialist/libero Lacey Lavarias (Iolani '04), challenges Loyola Marymount (19-10), with senior libero Michelle Look (Punahou '02).
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Lecca Roberts (Seabury Hall '04 of Kula) was a West Coast Conference honorable-mention selection. Roberts' 1.32 blocks per game was fourth in the league.
Hardin-Simmons (Abilene, Texas) junior Virginia Aguilar (Waimea) was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division District 6 first team. Aguilar earned a 4.00 GPA in computer science.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Cal State L.A. senior guard Monica Tokoro (Iolani '01 of 'Aiea) was named the Wilson California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Tokoro averaged 17.3 points on 67.7-percent shooting (21 of 31), 5.7 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 rebounds in wins over Humboldt State (Nov. 23), Concordia-Irvine (Friday) and South Dakota (Saturday).
California Lutheran junior guard Tiffiny Shim (Kamehameha '03) scored 15 points in a 97-93 double overtime win against Marian College (Fond du Lac, Wis.) at the D3 in Hawai'i Hoops Classic at Kamehameha on Friday.
Freshman guard Cheryl Lee (Maryknoll '05) added 11 points.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Six players from Hawai'i were named Daktronics-NAIA Women's Soccer All-America Scholar-Athletes. They are: Azusa Pacific (Calif.) junior forward Mari Kasamoto (Iolani of Honolulu), in liberal studies; Azusa Pacific (Calif.) junior Jolie Nitta (Mililani '02), in psychology; Bethel College (Ind.) junior forward Lisa Franke (Kealakehe '03), in elementary education; Bethel College (Ind.) junior midfielder Katy Jenkins (homeschooled, from Lawai) in business administration; Missouri Valley College senior defender Jennifer Katres (Kalaheo '02) in biology; Oregon Institute of Technology junior midfielder Jenavi Iida (Baldwin of Kahului) in medical imaging.
Bethel (Ind.) senior defender Malia Carenio (Waiakea '01) and junior midfielder JoBette Nabarro (Waiakea '03) were named to the Mid-Central College Conference All-Conference team.
Westmont (Santa Barbara, Calif.) freshman forward Amy Lawson (Iolani '05 of Honolulu) was named to the 13-member NAIA All-Tournament Team, after scoring three goals to help the team advance to the semifinals.
FOOTBALL
Wisconsin senior center Donovan Raiola (Kamehameha '01) received all-Big Ten honorable-mention honors by the conference media.
Washington senior linebacker Joe Lobendahn (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) received the Guy Flaherty Most Inspirational Award at the team's awards banquet last week.
The Flaherty Award, named after its first winner in 1908, is Washington's oldest and most prestigious individual award, according to a school press release.
Lobendahn also won the team's MVP Defense award for the second straight season, after compiling 76 tackles. Washington's MVP awards are voted on by members of the team.
Sophomore defensive tackle Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis '03 of Honolulu) was the recipient of the L. Wait Rising Lineman of the Year Award.
Junior defensive end Donny Mateaki (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) was presented with the Earle Glant Tough Husky Award.
Freshman defensive lineman Daniel Te'o-Nesheim (Hawai'i Prep '05) was named the Mark Drennan Defensive Scout Squad Player of the Year.
Arizona State freshman offensive guard Shawn Lauvao (Farrington '05) earned the McBurney Scout Team Award given to a player on the offensive scout team.
Central Missouri State senior offensive lineman Darryl Grace (Konawaena of Captain Cook) was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division District 7 second team. Grace earned a 3.61 GPA in aviation.
WATER POLO
UCLA senior driver David Pietsch (Punahou '01 of Manoa) was named to the all-Mountain Pacific Sport Federation second team. Pietsch earned his first All-MPSF honor after leading the Bruins in goals scored with a career-best 39.
SAILING
Naval Academy Preparatory School's Martin Sterling (Mid-Pacific '05) placed fifth out of 17 in the laser radial class at the National High School Single-handed Championships off Waikiki Sunday.
ROWING
Columbia freshman Lia Rosner (Mid-Pacific '05 of Manoa) helped her B Novice Women's Eight crew to a sixth-place finish at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Oct. 29.
