Hawai'i surfers had a good day in good waves on the opening day of the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing men's contest yesterday.

The first two rounds and half of the third round were completed in traditional wave heights of 6 to 8 feet at Sunset Beach.

The contest is the second of three in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

Nine of the top 10 heat scores yesterday were turned in by Hawai'i surfers.

Makua Rothman of O'ahu's North Shore led the charge with a two-wave total of 17.16 in the second round. Rothman won three heats yesterday.

"I don't know, maybe the stars are lining up right for me," he said. "I never did win three of my heats in one day before. It felt good to advance to the next day."

Among the other Hawai'i standouts were Nathan Carroll, Kamalei Alexander, Kekoa Bacalso, Dustin Barca, Hank Gaskell and Myles Padaca.

International standouts included Australians Beau Mitchell and Daniel Ross.

The top seeds did not surf yesterday. Among the top seeds are Pancho Sullivan, who won the OP Pro Hawai'i at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach on Wednesday, three-time former world champion Andy Irons, and defending Triple Crown champion Sunny Garcia.
