Two teams from Maui will try tonight to go where no Valley Isle football squad has gone before — the First Hawaiian Bank State Championship finals.

Baldwin, 11-0 and ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll of coaches and media, faces No. 2 Punahou (10-2) in a highly anticipated showdown after the Bears received the first-round bye over the Buffanblu of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 at Aloha Stadium.

Just down the road, Kamehameha-Maui (6-6) will play at Radford (8-2) in a Division II state semifinal. That game is set for 7:30 at John Velasco Stadium.

Here is a closer look at each game, plus today's other two semifinal matchups:

DIVISION I

KAHUKU VS. WAI'ANAE

Where: Aloha Stadium

When: 4 p.m.

Records: Kahuku 9-1; Wai'anae 9-3

Last week: Kahuku had a bye; Wai'anae defeated Kealakehe, 21-14

Notable: Both teams are built around a solid, physical defense and multi-weapon running game. Kahuku's defense is led by super-quick end B.J. Beatty and lineman Kaniela Tuipulotu, who had five sacks two weeks ago in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship game. Wai'anae's defense features an outstanding linebacker in junior George Kauwalu, who is effective both in pass rush and against the run. Kahuku's Malosi Te'o is an explosive running back who rushed for 248 yards and three touchdowns — of 73, 53 and 72 yards — on just 15 carries two weeks ago. Wai'anae has a strong fullback in Nui Stevens (115 yards, 17 carries last week) and dangerous tailbacks in Darius Fuller and Curtis Jones.

BALDWIN VS. PUNAHOU

Where: Aloha Stadium

When: 7 p.m.

Records: Baldwin 11-0; Punahou 10-2

Last week: Baldwin had a bye; Punahou defeated 'Aiea, 35-14

Notable: This game could take a while, as both teams rely heavily on a pass-oriented run-and-shoot attack. Baldwin's Kalehua Moniz is a veteran quarterback who has thrown for 2,390 yards and 25 touchdowns. His favorite targets are Chase Nakamura (47 catches, 910 yards, 9 TDs) and Colten Quinabo (44, 806, 9 TDs). Punahou quarterback Brett Kan is a two-year starter who has passed for 2,342 yards and 22 touchdowns. He has three reliable receivers in Miah Ostrowski (82 catches, 1,055 yards, 10 TDs), River Kim (38, 477, 3 TDs) and Zac Yamagishi (19, 225, 4 TDs). Ostrowski also is a dangerous return man. Punahou's underrated defense — quick and swarming — is led by end Jonathan Overton.

DIVISION II

MOANALUA AT IOLANI

Where: Kozuki Stadium

When: 2 p.m.

Records: Moanalua 9-2; Iolani 7-4

Last week: Moanalua defeated Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 34-20; Iolani had a bye

Notable: This game features contrasting offenses, with Moanalua sticking mostly to the ground behind a triple-option attack and Iolani running a sophisticated no-huddle passing game led by quarterback Kiran Kepo'o (2,046 yards, 25 touchdowns). The key to Na Menehune's offense is senior Stanford Leti, who will line up at quarterback, running back and slot. Each team's defense is led by an excellent, ball-hawking linebacker — Jon Takamura for Iolani and Quinton Tang for Moanalua.

KAMEHAMEHA-MAUI AT RADFORD

Where: John Velasco Stadium

When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Kamehameha-Maui 6-6; Radford 8-2

Last week: Kamehameha-Maui defeated Kaua'i, 14-7; Radford had a bye

Notable: Radford has home-field advantage but also is short-handed after starting quarterback Ryan Burciaga broke his collarbone two weeks ago. Justin Lord did a credible job in Burciaga's place in the fourth quarter of the Rams' victory over Moanalua, but he also is their leading receiver, creating another problem. Running back Alex Daniels will have to shoulder a bigger burden, and he came through against Moanalua with 138 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries, including 48 yards on 11 carries in the fourth quarter after Burciaga went down. Kamehameha-Maui has a strong ground attack, with fullback Kaui Owan running behind a big offensive line led by guard/tackle Walter Kahaiali'i (6-4, 305).
