Forecast is for weather of almost every kind

By Mike Gordon
Advertiser Staff Writer

The weather pattern for the Thanksgiving weekend has more ingredients than your grandma's turkey stuffing with rain, light trade winds, high surf, cloudy skies and occasional sunshine all expected.

The National Weather Service calls its forecast for the rest of the week "a mixed bag."

"There is going to be a lot of different stuff going on," said weather service meteorologist Tim Craig.

Today's first course will be scattered showers, thanks to a weak cold front over the Kaua'i channel.

"I don't think it will be gloomy, but it is not going to be a nice sunny trade-wind day," Craig said. "I hope it will be, but I'm not counting on it."

The trade winds today will be gone by tomorrow, serving up drier conditions in their place, Craig said.

On Saturday, another cold front moving southeast from Kaua'i will bring additional rain, but that will give way to drier conditions on Sunday.

Predicting what will happen "is very difficult" when the weather pattern is expected to change from day to day, Craig said.

But significant rainfall is not expected throughout the weekend, he said.

Two north swells, though, are forecast for the holiday weekend.

The first one, which was to roll onto north-facing shores last night with 10- to 16-foot surf, produced a high-surf advisory that will be in effect until 4 a.m. tomorrow.

The swell is expected to weaken tonight and tomorrow. A second, less-powerful swell is expected to hit north-facing shores on Sunday.
