Ishii ends up 51st at qualifying school

Hawai'i's David Ishii shot a final-round 79 and finished tied for 51st at the Champions Tour Qualifying School at the PGA Southern California Golf Course in Calimesa, Calif.
Ishii, who was 35th entering the final round, finished with a five-round total of 450 — 21 strokes behind leader Massy Kuramoto (70—429).
The top seven golfers earned exempt status for the 2006 season. Golfers who finished Nos. 8 through 15 earned conditional exemptions.
Ishii finished 12 strokes behind the 15th-place finisher.
Former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden finished 14th with a 75—437.
KONO TIED FOR FIFTH AT AJGA CLASSIC
Hawai'i's Stephanie Kono shot an opening-round 71 and was tied for fifth at the American Junior Golf Association Classic at Sea Island, Ga.
Kono is three strokes behind leader Kimberly Donovan. Hawai'i's Kimberly Kim is tied for 25th at 77.
In the boys division, Hawai'i's Tadd Fujikawa is tied for 33rd after a 75.

UH'S SPIERS, WRIGHT MAKE WATCH LIST
University of Hawai'i sophomore infielder Joe Spiers and junior right-handed pitcher Steven Wright are among 120 players on the initial watch list for the Brooks Wallace National Baseball Player of the Year Award.
The list will be trimmed to 12 by late May with three finalists announced after the NCAA Super Regionals.
Spiers was an all-Western Athletic Conference second-team shortstop. He batted .307 and led the Rainbows in runs (45) and steals (31).
Wright was 5-3 with a 3.26 earned run average and a team-leading four saves. He had 75 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings. He won the Russ Ford Relief Pitcher Award at the Cape Cod League during the summer. He was 3-0 with a 0.63 ERA and a league-leading 12 saves for the Orleans Cardinals. He had 41 strikeouts in 28 innings.
