When Wai'anae lost Henry Keomalu to an ankle injury in last week's semifinal loss to 'Aiea, it essentially lost two players: a quarterback and a kicker.
But Liko Manuel and William Duseigner filled in admirably to help lift the No. 8 Seariders over No. 9 Farrington, 17-7, last night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association third-place game at Roosevelt. The win secured Wai'anae the OIA's third and final berth in the state Division I tournament.
The Seariders (8-3) will travel to Kealakehe (9-2) in an opening-round game Friday. The Waveriders captured the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I crown with a 35-6 win last night against Kea'au.
"We're all happy," Duseigner said. "Everybody played hard."
The Governors (5-7) end their season having lost their last three.
Manuel played quarterback for Keomalu, while Duseigner, an offensive guard, did the place-kicking. Manuel threw a 37-yard TD pass to Joshua Telles and Duseigner booted a 31-yard field goal.
"I was a little nervous before the game, but after the first play it (nervousness) went away," said Manuel, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound senior, who was 5 of 11 for 64 yards. "My boys on the line helped me a lot."
The line aided the Seariders in rushing for 184 yards on the muddy Roosevelt field, which hosted a soccer game earlier in the day. Tailback Curtis Jones led the way with 88 yards on 21 carries, including a 4-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.
The game was pretty much a struggle for both teams. Farrington drove on its first series from its 29 to the Wai'anae 15, where Siavalua Faliuga blocked Larry Siuta's 32-yard field-goal attempt.
The Seariders took over from their 47 and reached the Governors' 14, where Duseigner lined his 31-yard field goal to make it 3-0 with 1:29 left in the first quarter.
Wai'anae's defense contributed when James Smith recovered a fumble at the Farrington 44 after Governors' running back Hercules Sula lost the ball following a 10-yard gain. The Seariders cashed in on the turnover on Manuel's TD pass. Telles, a running back, caught a short pass then broke two tackles at the 9-yard line en route to the end zone. Duseigner's PAT made it 10-0 with 1:32 left in the half.
Farrington responded with its only score of the game. Elijah Filifili hit Elijah Lesu on a 26-yard TD pass with 29 seconds left in the half. Siuta's PAT pulled Farrington to 10-7.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Seariders got insurance, driving 55 yards on 10 consecutive running plays with Jones scoring from the 4 on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Farrington threatened on its ensuing series, reaching the Wai'anae 10. But Preston Ayala's interception in the end zone for a touchback thwarted the drive.
Chad Paaluhi also had an interception later with 2:38 left in the game and Faliuga got one with 1:25 left to secure the game.
Sula led the Governors with 124 yards rushing on 18 carries.
KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAI'I 41, KONAWAENA 6: Mana Silva passed for two touchdowns, rushed for one and returned an interception for another to give the host Warriors their first Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II title in only their second varsity season.
The Warriors (10-2) will play at Moanalua Friday in an opening-round game of the Division II state tournament.
Silva passed for 199 yards and rushed for 120.
Koa Aiwohi led the Warriors with 10 tackles and also had an interception.
