Hilo tops Chaminade in PacWest volleyball

Rose Ramsey hammered 24 kills and had a .500 hitting percentage as Hawai'i-Hilo outlasted Chaminade, 28-30, 30-16, 30-27, 28-30, 15-10, in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at UHH Gymnasium.
Taina Savage added 19 kills and 19 digs, Kahealani Silva contributed 26 digs and Elisa Imhof had 52 assists for the Vulcans (13-11 overall, 4-7 PacWest).
Trina Kauliakamoa led the Silverswords (9-15, 0-11) with 19 kills and 16 digs. Christina Williams added 16 kills, Brittnee Fonnesbeck 14 kills and Annie Lanoza 31 digs for Chaminade.
GOLF
COTNER, MCLACHLIN AIM FOR FINAL PGA QUALIFIER
Keoke Cotner and Parker McLachlin both climbed closer to advancing to the PGA Tour Final Qualifying School yesterday at their Q-School Second Stage tournaments in Texas.
Cotner, a Kamehameha graduate and Nationwide Tour player, shot a 1-under-par 71 to climb into a share of 20th at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club at McKinney. At 216, Cotner is 12 shots out of the lead, but only a shot out of advancing. The top 19 and ties after today's final round move on.
McLachlin, a Punahou graduate, is playing at Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood. He birdied five of the final eight holes to shoot a 3-under 69 and move into a tie for 24th at 215. McLachlin is two shots out of the top 19. Tour player Bill Glasson is the leader at 69—205.
AIR RIFLERY
PUNAHOU'S HORN SIGNS WITH NEVADA
Punahou senior Heather Horn, the 2004 state champion and 2005 runner-up, has signed a letter of intent to continue riflery at the University of Nevada.
"I'm glad that my four years of shooting at Punahou has paid off," she said.
Besides joining a strong program, Horn said another attraction was the school's broadcast journalist program.
"It was a tough decision," she said. "There were other schools I was looking at."
She said TCU had an academic scholarship available, but would have an athletic scholarship ready the following year.
Horn won the 2004 state girls' air riflery individual title and finished second to teammate Simone Riford in last week's state tournament.
Nevada has two shooters from Hawai'i on the men's team — Saint Louis School graduates Michael Tanoue and Eric Okamoto. Four-time All-American Ryan Tanoue, also a Saint Louis alum, is the program's team manager.
BASKETBALL
KAMEHAMEHA GUARD LORENZO TO GONZAGA
Kamehameha Schools senior Tatriana Lorenzo has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Gonzaga University next year.
Lorenzo, a 5-foot-7 guard, was a key reserve as a freshman and has started the past two seasons. She was a first-team Interscholastic League of Honolulu all-star last season.
Lorenzo said she turned down offers from Santa Clara, Weber State and Idaho State, among others.
"I kind of made my decision this past summer," said Lorenzo, who visited Gonzaga's campus in Spokane, Wash., last month. "I liked the way the coaches and players got along like family. They seemed comfortable with each other and they're there to support each other off the court."
Rachel Kane, a 2003 Punahou graduate and former Advertiser State Player of the Year, is beginning her junior season as a Gonzaga point guard. Although Kane and Lorenzo are friends from Dennis Agena's Kalakaua Foundation basketball clinic, Lorenzo said Kane did not pressure her into coming to Gonzaga.
"She gave me my space," Lorenzo said. "I really liked the campus — it's not too big — and the city is pretty mellow with not too many distractions. I can focus on school and basketball, and that's what I want to do."
BYU-HAWAI'I ROLLS TO 127-57 EXHIBITION WIN
Eric Boyce scored 21 points and Brigham Young-Hawai'i shot 69 percent from the field to bury Huaqiao University of China, 127-57, last night in an exhibition game at Cannon Activities Center.
Austin Smylie added 19 points for the Seasiders, who made 51 of 74 field-goal attempts and placed seven players in double-figure scoring.
Zhang Jiabin led Huaqiao with 24 points.
TENNIS
SAN DIEGO STATE SLIPS PAST HAWAI'I, 4-3
Christian Groh defeated Sascha Heinemann at No. 1 singles as San Diego State edged the University of Hawai'i men's team, 4-3, yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Groh, who won 7-6 (8), 6-0, also teamed with Markus Dickhardt to help the Aztecs win all three doubles matches and the critical single team point that proved to be the difference.
The teams split the six singles matches with Ryan Sceats, Derrick Lajola and Chad Faulk winning for the Rainbow Warriors.
BYUH WOMEN PLAY FOR RAINBOW SINGLES TITLE
Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Julia Ustyuzhanina and Jing Jing Liu advanced to today's singles final of A flight in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Ustyuzhanina advanced yesterday after both of her scheduled opponents defaulted — including Seasider teammate Tetyana Bula (sore wrist). Liu beat San Diego State's Eliska Krausova, 6-2, 6-1, before winning her semifinal match when the Aztecs' Dita Hauerlandova defaulted.
Freshman Erin Katayama, the lone player left for host UH entering the day, lost in a B flight quarterfinal.
BASEBALL
FRESNO STATE TO HOST WAC TOURNAMENT
Fresno State has been awarded the site of the Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament, the conference announced yesterday.
Six teams from the seven-team conference will advance to the tournament, the first for the WAC since 1999, when it also was hosted by FSU.
The tournament runs May 25 to 28. The Rainbows close their regular season May 21 at San Jose State.
"You'd like a situation where you're playing at a neutral site, but I'm glad we're just having a tournament," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.
He added that UH did not submit a bid to host the tournament.
The Rainbows open the season Feb. 1 against San Diego State at Les Murakami Stadium.
