Man critical after attack with sickle

By Peter Boylan
Advertiser Staff Writer

Police yesterday arrested a Kalihi man suspected of stabbing a man with a sickle and then trying to hide from police under a house.

Ricardo Devera was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday, his uncle, Bill Aquino, said. A man, identified by Aquino as one of Devera's brothers, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, police said.

Aquino said the brothers had a fight in their Desha Lane apartment. The assailant stabbed and slashed Ricardo Devera with a sickle that he usually uses to cut grass, Aquino said.

The uncle said he saw Ricardo Devera covered with blood from his neck to his stomach shortly before the victim passed out in his sister's apartment.

Another brother, Oscar Devera, said the assailant was cut on one arm during the fight.

Arresting officers handcuffed and shackled the suspect.
