Big Island campground, trail reopen

HILO, Hawai'i — The state has reopened the Muliwai Trail and Waimanu Valley Campground on the Big Island.
State officials closed the trail and campground in late September when severe storms over several weeks were forecast for the Big Island.
"When rough weather raises the threat of high surf or stream flash-flooding, it is necessary to close the trail to protect public safety because the trail and valley are remote, and hikers may be subject to these dangers as well as potential trail landslides or falling trees," said Peter Young, chairman of the state Board of Land and Natural Resources.
The 11-mile trek involves crossing several rivers.
