Jade Moon, who has been a fixture at KGMB-9 for the past 18 years, is leaving the CBS affiliate Nov. 30, when the current Nielsen ratings period is over. She wants to become a full-time mom.
"Every mother who works outside the home knows how challenging and difficult it is to balance the needs of family with the demands of career," the outgoing anchor said in a statement. "My son is a little boy (Zachary is 11) but he won't be for long. I want him to have a full-time mom before he grows up."
Moon is married to attorney Ward Jones.
Last week on the evening news, Moon, a former health reporter, went public with an episode from her private life in a series called "Gift of Life." Moon shared the story of donating her kidney to her diabetic father, Harold Yonashiro.
Though she is leaving television for now, Moon told her colleagues she would continue to be part of the station's annual Hawai'i Foodbank campaign, a community endeavor she has led for 15 years.
According to Kim Montour, interim general manager at KGMB, Kim Gennaula will anchor the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts solo after Moon's departure. Montour said there are no immediate plans for a co-anchor.
