Donations from the past weekend's tournaments pushed the PGA Tour past $1 billion in charitable giving, since the tour began to keep track in 1938.
An example of the giving is the Sony Open in Hawai'i, which started in 1999. It has raised more than $5 million for local charities since, with partner The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
"Thanks to the incredible generosity of the tournaments, fans, volunteers and business partners who support the PGA Tour, our goal of giving $1 billion to charity is a reality," PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said in a release. "We hope the focus on this event inspires a continued enthusiasm for giving that ensures more and more money is donated every year. Our goal is to give our next $1 billion in just 10 years."
Nearly all the 100-plus tour events are structured as non-profit organizations, such as Sony organizer Friends of Hawai'i Charities, Inc.
