There's no ignoring it: Fireworks are a huge, smoky part of New Year's Eve celebrations in Hawai'i.

So, where can you see the big fireworks displays at midnight tonight? Aloha Tower Marketplace hosts one biggie; another, sponsored by the Waikiki Improvement Association, will be launched over Waikiki. Both are free and open to the public.

If you have a clear view of the Kahala coastline, the Kahala Mandarin Oriental is ringing in the new year with a private midnight fireworks display. Out Kapolei way, the Ihilani Resort at Ko Olina has scheduled a midnight display for guests, too.

And if you're launching your own celebration at home, be safe. Adults must supervise children, keeping a hose or bucket of water nearby in case of fire. Even sparklers can be hazardous.

If you have pets, try to keep them safe indoors; a radio or TV at a normal volume might keep them company and calm them if you're not there.

Still wondering how to celebrate the new year? Here are a few events tonight that sound like hits to ring in the new year:

  • Go exotica: The Forbidden World of Don Tiki New Year's Eve Extravaganza features Don Tiki, of course, and Lopaka Colon, Noel Okimoto, the Don Tiki Dancers, Willow Chang and Sherry Shaoling. Cost: $150 general for a prime-rib dinner buffet (beginning at 7 p.m.) and the show (at 9 p.m.); or $95 general for cocktails and show. 921-6137.

  • So long, farewell! It's the final show for Kapono's at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Called Final Hour at the Tower, the concert features Henry Kapono, Speed Limit, Ledward Ka'apana, Inoa'ole and others, plus fireworks viewing, from 5:30 p.m.; for 21 and older. Cost: $30 general; VIP packages also available. 536-2161.

  • Island style: The Makaha Sons, Robi Kahakalau, Kapena, Herb Ohta Jr., the Opihi Pickers and others share their musical wealth at the 9th annual Ho'omaka Hou, from 7 p.m. in the Sheraton Waikiki hotel's Hawaii Ballroom. Cost: $85 general, $55 children 5 to 12 for the show; $225 and $135 for buffet dinner, two drinks (or unlimited juice and soft drinks for the youngsters), party favors and the show. 921-4600.
