Hula Bowl invites 7 with ties to Hawai'i

Seven college football players with Hawai'i ties, including four from the University of Hawai'i, have been named to the West roster for the 60th Hula Bowl All-Star Game.

The UH players are strong safety Lono Manners, linebacker/long snapper Tanuvasa Moe, defensive end Kila Kamakawiwo'ole and offensive guard Brandon Eaton.

Also invited are Saint Louis alums Vaka Manupuna (Colorado, nose guard) and Joe Lobendahn (Washington, inside linebacker), and Kahuku graduate Bristol Olomua (Texas Tech, tight end).

The Hula Bowl will be played Jan. 21 at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Complete rosters are expected to be released today.


BASKETBALL

HAWAI'I PACIFIC WINS

Audrius Peciukas had 20 points and eight rebounds in just 19 minutes, lifting Hawai'i Pacific to a 79-62 victory over Saint John's University (Collegeville, Minn.) in a non-conference game last night at Blaisdell Arena.

Joseph Ison added 15 points and Brandon Lee 11 for HPU (2-9).

Tyler Westman scored 14 points for Saint John's (5-3).

UH-HILO TRIUMPHS

Travis Sobers scored 16 points to lead four teammates in double figures as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 76-68, in a non-conference game last night at Hilo civic.

Terrance Troupe and Justin Griffin each added 15 points, Joe Travis had 14 and Justin Dobson 13 for the Vulcans (8-3).

Jay DeMaestri had 24 points, hitting 6 of 11 from 3-point range, and 12 rebounds for Monterey Bay (3-7).

PUNAHOU PREVAILS

Danny Cho scored 15 points, making three of his team's 10 3-pointers, to lead the host Buffanblu to an 84-33 victory over Kamehameha-Hawai'i yesterday in the Fifth Annual Punahou Holiday Classic.

Miah Ostrowski added 13 points and Dalton Hilliard 10 for Punahou, which plays Kalaheo in tonight's feature game at 7:30.

The Mustangs advanced by defeating Damien, 51-44, with Kahua Hollinger and Marvin Judd each scoring 11 points.

IOLANI LOSES IN OREGON

Chris Gweth scored 17 points yesterday to lead Hillsboro (Ore.) to a 53-41 victory over four-time defending Hawai'i champion Iolani in the first round of the Les Schwab Invitational in Portland, Ore.

Hillsboro, a 2004 state semifinalist, led 24-21 at halftime and 37-30 after three periods. The Raiders cut the lead to four points with about four minutes remaining, but Hillsboro pulled away.

Kawika Shoji led Iolani (6-5) with 13 points and Vinny Nip added 10.


BASEBALL

UH FUNDRAISER JAN. 16

Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda will be the guest speaker at the fourth annual University of Hawai'i Baseball Grand Slam Celebration at the Stan Sheriff Center on Jan. 16.

The event, a fundraiser for the Rainbow program, will start at 5:30 p.m., with guests having a chance to meet with UH players and coaches. Pupus and drinks will be available, and a live and silent auction will be held.

Cost is $850 (a portion of which is tax deductible) to sponsor a table, or $75 per individual seat.
