Singer Danny Couch managed to complete 300 personalized Christmas greetings for those who paid a premium to buy his "Christmas in Hawaii" CD, on which he named the buyer or the recipient (if it was a gift) in a message that precedes the music. He hoped to sell 100, but 300 responded and got a certificate of authenticity, with the recording tucked in a lauhala basket. ...
MOSTLY MUSIC: Mike De Guzman has replaced Jan Luna in the Society of Seven Las Vegas, the combo ensconced at the Outrigger Waikiki's Main Showroom. Luna will be teaching 'ukulele; De Guzman, a Leileluha grad, has played with acts such as Chito's Express, Hot Stuff and Tino & the Rhythm Klub. ...
Mayor Mufi Hannemann's "I Fell in Love With Honolulu," which has been available on CD, now is offered as a four-minute DVD, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Honolulu Ho'okipa Project. Most Tower, Bestsellers, Borders and Barnes & Nobles stores stock it ($4.99). ...
Christmas definitely is in the air. Na Leo's "Feel the Spirit of Christmas" unfolds at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, with Keali'i Reichel as guest. Call (877) 750-4400. Best bet for Christmas night out: The Honolulu Boy Choir's Christmas dinner show, from 7:45 p.m. Sunday at the Royal Hawaiian's Monarch Room. The delightful young lads always present a heart-tugging, joyous evening, with song and hula spelling holiday merriment. Tickets for dinner and show are $69.50 for adults, $39.50 for children 5-12; show only, $45 and $26. Call 921-4600. ...
Tickets may be scarce, but do try to catch a performance of "Aladdin Jr." at Diamond Head Theatre. It's a whole new whirl of a show, with a youthful cast. The final three shows are tonight through Thursday. ...
TRADE WINDS: While Daniel Ho is stoked about getting a nomination for the second Hawaiian Music Grammy Award in February, the producer-recording artist finds he's in a quandary. Has to do with credits, or lack of them. While Ho, Paul Konwiser and Wayne Wong are rightful producers of the "Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Vol. I" CD, Ho wishes for visibility and publicity for performers George Kahumoku Jr., Cyril Pahinui, Ledward Ka'apana, Ozzie Kotani and more. Ho is aware of the growing disenchantment with the category, which seems to favor ki ho'alu over vocals, and frets about reaction. Even though the disc has Pahinui singing dad Gabby Pahinui's signature, "Hi'ilawe." "I don't want to be pouring any more lighter fluid on the barbecue — it makes everything taste like gas," he says. Understandably, the camps are divided about how Hawaiian music is perceived an ocean away. ...
FINALLY: The Baraquio sisters (Angela, Bernadette, Tess and Gloria) were at the Honolulu Club recently to tape a segment for their "Living Local With the Baraquios" special on OC16. The show, airing the first week of 2006, deals with New Year's resolutions and fitness, with workout tips from personal trainer Brad Krzykowski, Pilates with Dana Hershman and kicking advice from Dennis Alexio (who was working out there). Even station colleague Russell Shimooka did a bit from the squash court. ...
