Tanuvasa, Schwitters reach Hall of Fame

Advertiser Staff

Football star Maa Tanuvasa and tennis figure Jim Schwitters have been named to the Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame and Cybermuseum.

Their inclusion as the class of 2006 will bring the membership in the nine-year-old shrine to 100.

Tanuvasa and Schwitters will be formally inducted at a banquet Feb. 7 at Honolulu Country Club.

Tanuvasa, a Mililani High graduate, played three seasons for the University of Hawai'i (1990-92), helping the Rainbows to an 11-2 record, the Holiday Bowl title in 1992 and the school's only Top-20 finish.

He played nine seasons in professional football and was a member of the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos in 1997 and 1998. He shared the Broncos' team lead in sacks in 1998 and 1999 with 8.5 each season.

Tanuvasa is an assistant football coach at Mililani High.

Schwitters began a 38-year coaching legacy at UH as an assistant in 1964 and the following year became head coach of the men's team. In 1965-66 he took over the women's as well. In his career, his teams won 1,326 matches.

Schwitters was inducted into the U.S. Professional Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Exhibits from the Hall of Fame are on display at the Bishop Museum, state airports and Aloha Stadium. Nominations for 2007 may be made through the Hall of Fame Web site, www.aloha fame.org.
