OUR NEIGHBORHOOD ATHLETES
Nanakuli Pee Wee player goes primetime

Advertiser Staff

At about 4 feet tall and 70 pounds, Nanakuli Hawks Pee Wee player King Patrocinio, 12, already has a highlight reel.

King's long punt return during the Pop Warner Super Bowl playoffs in Orlando, Fla., was telecast on ESPN as one of sportscaster Chris Berman's Top 10 Plays of the Week.

King's weaving return through much larger opponents covered about 70 yards. The touchdown, however, was nullified because of a clipping penalty.

"He's one of my smallest kids," coach George Woolsey said. "(He's) a little over 48 inches because that's what you need to be to ride (Disney rides) up there."

The play was in Nanakuli's 20-0 victory over the Boston Raiders on Dec. 8 at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

Woolsey said there were four football fields at the complex and their conditions were "immaculate, like one golf course. (The players said) 'Wow, coach, how's the field? Mean, yah?' "

Nanakuli, playing in Division I, finished with a 1-1 record.

The Lihu'e Patriots, playing in Pee Wee Division II, became the first team from Hawai'i to win an overall title at the championship.

Another team from Kaua'i, this one a spirit squad from Kekaha, placed second during the event.

The Kekaha Panthers Junior Pee Wee Spirit Squad competed in the Large Intermediate Division.
