County to test four-way stop

WAILUKU — A four-way stop at the intersection of Market and Vineyard streets in Wailuku will be given an eight-week trial starting tomorrow.

County public works officials will be watching to see if the measure improves pedestrian safety and affects the traffic flow. Currently, only vehicles on the Vineyard Street approaches are required to stop.

LUNAS CELEBRATE 175TH ANNIVERSARY

LAHAINA — More than 4,200 invitations have been sent to former students and staff of Lahainaluna High School for the school's 175th anniversary celebration to be held April 7 and 8.

The celebration includes a parade down Front Street, campus tours, historical displays and a lu'au featuring the 37th annual David Malo Day pageant. A commemorative poster, limited-edition prints, T-shirts, aloha shirts, watches and a booklet are available for purchase.

Order forms for lu'au tickets and commemorative items can be downloaded from the school's Web site at lahainalu na.k12.hi.us or obtained from the school office. Donations may be sent to P.O. Box 1684, Lahaina, HI 96761, with checks payable to Lahainaluna High School 175th Anniversary.

Alumni interested in participating in the parade should contact class representatives listed on the Web site.

LIBRARY HOLDING FREE CRAFT EVENT

Kihei Public Library will hold a free holiday craft-making event at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The one-hour craft activity will be conducted by library staff and will include such projects as greeting-card and ornament making. All materials will be provided.

Call the library in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

KAILUA

IMU FUNDRAISER HELPS SURFRIDERS

Kailua High School is firing up its public imu to benefit the school's project graduation program and baseball team.

Food drop-off is from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 29 and pickup will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. the following day. The imu is straight ahead after entering the campus at 451 Ulumanu Drive.

The charge is $15 per large disposable aluminum pan of food and people are asked to place only one turkey in a pan. Food must be in the pan, thawed, seasoned and wrapped in foil.

Mail-in deadline to reserve a space is Dec. 21. Make checks payable to 2006 Kailua High School Project Grad and mail to 2006 Kailua High School PG, PMB Box 147, 305 Hahani St., Kailua, HI 96734. Write "IMU" on the envelope and include a contact telephone number and a self-addressed stamped envelope for a confirmation ticket.

BIG ISLAND

2-VEHICLE CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED

The Mountain View woman who died Friday from injuries she received in a two-vehicle crash on Hawai'i Belt Road has been identified as Patricia Farley, 60.

Farley was driving a 1994 Nissan sedan eastbound on Kipimana Street when she failed to yield the right of way and collided with a Ford pickup truck traveling south on Hawai'i Belt Road, police said.

The victim and her passenger, a 13-year-old boy, were taken to the Hilo Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at 7:42 p.m. The boy was treated and released.

The driver of the Ford truck, a 44-year-old Pahoa man, and his passenger, a 30-year-old man, were not injured.

Police are still trying to determine if speed or alcohol were involved and if all occupants were wearing their seat belts.


NANAKULI

CREWS PUT OUT 5-ACRE BRUSHFIRE

A brushfire in Nanakuli yesterday consumed about five acres and was under control within 45 minutes, said Fire Department Capt. Emmit Kane.

The blaze was reported at about 1 p.m. in an area known as Mokiawe on the east-facing ridge of Nanakuli Valley. No homes were in any immediate danger, Kane said.

Five fire engines and two tankers responded to the brushfire. No injuries were reported, Kane said.

Fire crews had the blaze extinguished by nightfall.
