Keali'i Bertlemann's volleyball season did not end on a happy note last year.

He suffered a foot injury and missed Castle's final two regular-season matches, in addition to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

"He really wanted to work hard to make this year better," said Knights coach Pat Gomes-Woosley.

Bertlemann made this season so much better, he was named the OIA Eastern Division Player of the Year by division coaches.

"He's come a long way," Gomes-Woosley said. "He made an impact and was a big difference in every match as a strong blocker and hitter."

Bertlemann, a 6-foot-2 senior middle blocker, was the only Castle player named to the East's all-star first team.

Kalaheo was represented by three seniors — Elias David, Chris Tumaneng and Mana Guerreiro. Roosevelt had two first team selections — senior Nobuhisa Morimoto and sophomore Kaina Palama. Kahuku senior Charles Bell and Kaimuki senior Leigh Sinoto round out the first team.

Roosevelt's Kaui Mendonca was named Coach of the Year.
