DENVER, Colo. — President Bush nominated a new superintendent of the Air Force Academy yesterday as the school works to recover from scandals over sexual assaults and religious intolerance.

Lt. Gen. John F. Regni, commander of Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., will replace Lt. Gen. John Rosa Jr. Regni was director of manpower, personnel and support at Pacific Command headquarters at Camp Smith on O'ahu from 1991 to 1994.

Regni's appointment must be approved by the Senate.

Rosa is leaving to become president of The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, S.C.

Dozens of female cadets at the Air Force Academy have said they were punished or forced to resign after reporting they were sexually assaulted.

The allegations led to an overhaul of the school's command structure and put Rosa in charge.

This week, the Air Force issued new guidelines on religious tolerance after complaints that evangelical Christian staffers and cadets at the academy near Colorado Springs have harassed students of other faiths.
