Are your running shoes ready to be retired? Take them to Runners HI in 'Aiea or Niketown in Waikiki. Both stores accept all brands of shoes and ship them to Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles shoes into surfaces for various sports and playgrounds around the country. From 1993 to 2004, some 16 million pairs were recycled. Both retail outlets only accept small quantities — 10 pairs or fewer — at a time. Call Runners HI at 488-6588 or Niketown at 943-6453.

ART OF WAR

OUTRIGGER HOSTS EXHIBIT

Portraits of U.S. military people injured in North Africa during World War II will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Saturday in the Kalakaua Room of the Outrigger Waikiki hotel. Painted by award-winning Australian artist Louis Kahan, who worked under the auspices of the International Red Cross, the portraits form a record of his wartime experience. The Hawai'i Army Museum Society is providing volunteer docents.

FINAL WORD

"It has an element of 'The X-Files.' the only thing we're missing here is aliens."

Peter Stormare | co-star of "Prison Break," in TV Guide
